I just got my car and it doesn't really need it however I wanted to change the oil to royal purple. However someone told me not to do that because the factory puts in
"break in oil". Can someone confirm this?

No break in oil on these. SRT chose Pennzoil and that's what goes in mine;)

Hi, the Pennzoil Ultra 0W-40 recommended by SRT looks to be a low ash oil with good cold weather flow specs. Does Royal met the required spec? MS12633.

There is no break in oil. Sent mine off for analysis and confirmed that it is just regular synthetic oil.

What synthetic oil is "best" is always up for debate.
I'd been told by many that Amsoil was the superior oil, so I put it in my '09 SRT8 Challenger and decided to have it tested by Blackstone Labs . The oil was tested with a tick over 3000 on it. The results were very positive. Therein, I have no difficulty believing Amsoil's claims. Their 0W-40 Synthetic Signature Series is in my Cat now and it meets or exceeds FCA's MS12633 standard.
I have no experience with RP, mainly because it was developed for racing engines, and racing engines typically get torn down and rebuilt with less than 1000 miles on them.
Your oil filter is every bit as important to your engine as the oil. Don't skimp there.

I've been running Royal Purple in the 2010 Challenger SRT since the first change but until that critter hits 170,000 miles (preferably more), I won't know how well it has done.....

Go with what ya know I figure.... ;)

FCA only recommends that the oil meet the MS 12663 spec per the owner's manual.

This is simple...you bought at 70k dollar 700+ horsepower car with a 100K mile power train warranty. Just put the damn oil the SRT engineers decided it needs and call it good. Even "if" royal purple or unicorn magic or whatever is marginally better or worse if you put what SRT and dodge asked you to then any problems are warrantied. The price of an oil change over the life of the car between products is laughable when you consider the cost of the car. If one oil is marginally better than the other who gives a rip. Is that benefit worth more than your warranty?

Now if you have gone the mod route and your warranty is already void anyway I SERIOUSLY doubt royal purple vs Pennzoil is going to be the deciding factor in whether or not you supercharger grenades.

Just did my first oil change at 6-months 2100 miles. In total, the car used 1/2 a quart of oil in this time period so off to a good start. Took it to a dodge dealer to insure I got the correct filter and oil so there are no issues with the warranty.

I normally would use my local oil change place, but the dodge dealer is open on Saturday and you can make an appointment for a specific time, so it turns out to be very convenient.

One thing to watch for, is don't use an oil with high amounts of friction fighters on a new engine. It can inhibit ring seating. Stick with Mopar suggested oils until the engine is run in to recommended oil change intervals.

I do Amsoil .. Very good on high friction .. And cold starts .. The superior viscosity keeps the Engine sounding fresh .. Royal Purple is good no doubt but was in my GT500 engine that blew on a dyno pull !! So no more Royal for me.

I use Mobil 1 in all my SRTs and other vehicles for many years. Reasonably priced, works well and can find it locally. May not meet this alleged "spec", but I'd love for someone to even tell me what the heck that means. I change my oil every 1500 miles or so, can't say I'm worried about it in the least.
