I have a question CK, do the site owners, admins and/or mods have the ability to, or actually, view members private messages if they are not part of the conversation?

"Ability to" does not mean they ever would. That's a broad question. Just because you have access doesn't mean you would.

Does you car have the ability to ram people off the road?

    Ex IT

I ran multiple UNIX based email servers for a university. Do you think I had the ability to or actually viewed peoples emails?

    Yes, I could.
    No I didn't. Because I don't care.

Could I? Hell yes. Any message any time. If it's in the database or you have full access, it is possible.

The question using "ability" is still a broad brush.

    Edit: fixed wording

Not a broad bush valid question, most messages are plain text so is the feature enabled for mods and all admins to view the entire DB, enquiring minds want to know

Lol TIGwelder , UNIX email servers?! Were they right next to the WOPR mainframe? :D

LOL sorry man, I had to chime in after you dated yourself like that, no disrespect meant. ;) I am in IT now and babysit a data center for a multinational company that just switched from onsite Exchange email servers to a hybrid environment with MS O365 email service, and it is crap. Outages all the time, connectivity issues, latency, disparity between the onsite and cloud DBs, etc. To the question of the OP and Tigs' reply, the admin and mods may or may not have the ability to read the PMs, but if they can and whether they do or not wholly depends on their integrity as forum moderators. It is no different than any other position of elevated permissions in IT, and I would like to think the people put in the role of moderators here were chosen because they are people of integrity and patience (patience to put up with forum users like us, well like you,,,cuz I am an angel!)

Only reason I'm saying anything is because if the answer is yes, then people assume it's being done.

It's hard to answer questions that are actually multiple questions in one. That's why I called a broad brush.

Can an officer pull you over, give you a ticket, pull you out of the car, taze you and step on your neck?

Yes. Can he do 3 of the above without the other. Yes. Would people answer yes to the above question. Probably not. :D

As a moderator I don't have the authority/access to see any PM's but my own inbox.

IBM SP2, 3 frame, 9 Wide nodes partitioned in halves running AIX. Was a pretty cool system at the time. Same frame that was Big Blue for the chess match.

3 of those frames with 9 nodes connected together.

Look at your photo that is 8 thin nodes. Ours had 4 wide nodes per frame

When you set your main account to "vacation" to forward email to home and your home is set to vacation to forward to that account....and you send yourself an MP3 file and it loops and sends you 2500 copies of the same file...yes. I'm going to look because the attachment is filing up my fscking filesystem, because you are an idiot. I change the setting and delete the 2499 emails. And wish I could smack you in the head. Oh..and no more mr nice guy. Enjoy your new quota limit. :D

I would be surprised if administrators don't, it's like in telecomm sure I can trace your phone, trapp everything, hear you, get to your emails, im etc. But of I do that outside calea / court order I'm fired. If they do so what. I see this thread leading nowhere. Answer yes then a bazillion questions when how where, aka this is just stirring s'it up.
