I'm in the middle of installing the Barton shifter which is fairly straightforward, but the only issue is the neck of shifter is wider than the stock unit and I do not see how the factory boot is going to fit on it. Has anyone else installed this shift lever & if so, how did you get the boot on?

Barton will tell you to turn the boot inside out. Underneath near the top of the boot there is a plastic ring that holds the boot tight around the stock shaft. You have to gently pull the leather apart from itself where it is glued together and remove the ring. Once the ring is out the leather will stretch over the shaft of the shifter.

I used a screwdriver which widened as the handle got bigger , put some leather softener on it put the end in the shifter boot....let it sit for a while and the leather stretched .....making it slip over the barton handle.....worked great.

I installed a Hurst shifter in my '10 Challenger years ago & changing the mechanism is fairly easy. I needed to learn what to take apart on the console & because Barton doesn't include instructions with their shifter had me surfing the web to find out how to take it apart. That being said, it comes apart very easy with basic metric tools. The only thing I recommend getting is plastic trim removal "levers" so that you can take the console trim plate off without scratching it. The nice thing about their pistol grip shifter is that you can adjust the lever fore, aft, left & right to fit your comfort level. I installed it last evening & I have yet to drive the car, but there is a night & day difference between the factory shifter & the aftermarket ones. DSCF8089.JPG DSCF8090.JPG DSCF8090.JPG

friggin rights. those look awesome. both the pistol grip and ball shifter are good choices, I'm getting one and putting it in with a better clutch around spring time.
Going to have a hard time choosing between the two.

Does the plastic trim tool scratch or ding up the console when prying with it?or leave marks?

    Thanks

No. You use it to pry up the console top enough to free a couple of the retaining clips & once those are free you can just simply (and carefully) pull the top up to free up the rest of the clips.

I think back to the pistol grip that I had in my 1970 340 Challenger, and how cool I thought it was. Now for the 64000 dollar question, which Barton shifter does everyone think would feel the best when rowing through the gears on a drag strip or road course between the pistol grip and the ball shifter?
