Just got the Challenger Hellcat back from the shop at Arrigo Dodge. 10,000 miles and had burned rotors - replaced all 4 - fortunately under warranty. Anyone else had the issue?

    Fast Cat -
Apparently the rotors got so hot it changed the very molecular structure of the metal. They get brittle and can warp and according to the tech (all he works on are Vipers, Hellcats and SRT's) it impacts brake performance and safety. Nice sound on the 1/2 mile run :)

Indeed. Initially they wanted and this is just parts, mind you - $2,300 for the fronts and $900 for the back - I called SRT and got them to warranty them.

Are you using Arrigo on Okeechobee? What is the name of your service writer and Tech that you're using? Right now I'm using Napleton Dodge on Northlake and I'm using Johnny who is their Viper tech. How do you like them so far?

By 1/2 mile run I assume you were tracking the car at an event and overheated the brakes. IF thats true, I don't think Dodge owed you another set. Rotors are a wear item. You are fortunate to have them warranted.

$2300 for the fronts and $900 for the rears is ridiculous when it appears you can buy an entire set of factory rotors here for under $1500.

Arrigo Sawgrass - New York Mike is the guy's name. He seemed very thorough and knowledgeable- plus kept it inside for me. Works on a lot of vipers too.

The 12,000 mile warranty doesn't specify easy miles only :) I might have been to the track a time or two and that's what the car was designed for - tech said it's a race car with license plates - but I was referring to the 1/2 mile video. And I did some research - Speedlogix has a set of 4 replacement rotors for $1,500.

I think someone was speaking out of knowLedge.. Wo researching the exact alloy mix of the rotors I can't give the exact temp to change the molecular density of the steal but I can tell you it's stupid high like melting point temps.. (Think using a torch to bend a piece of metal hot kind of hot as that is exactly what happens that allows for the metal to bend) Your fluid would boil 100's of degrees sooner first as well as the ruining the composition of the pads themselves.. It seems more likely if the rotors were not warped (which they would have to be in order to achieve enough heat) that what happened was just build up on the rotors from the pads and the proper procedure is to replace the pads as they are trashed at this point and just use sand paper to rough up the rotors so the new pads can be properly seated to the rotor.. And a fluid change of course.

Edit.. If it's not too bad.. You can many times use sand paper on both the pad and rotors and just change the fluid.. Think slotted and drilled rotors.. They are that way for heat and cooling to a point.. But it's actually mostly to allow the break dust to exit so this doesn't happen.. This is why when you have slotted or drilled rotors you end up cleaning your whells of break dust every time you drive ;)

Mia culpa. I was facetious with the molecular structure bit but did heat up the rotors running 150-30 mph on a recurrent basis at the track. I believe you can machine rotors once or twice but why compromise?

There was a price issue on the brake pads originally, the brake pads are now literally like 25% of the original cost. The quote for replacing the pads/rotors had to be based off old pricing
