I was out and about the other day and got to talking with a Hellcat Charger (First Hellcat I have seen in the Wild) owner and he was told that California has taken issue with the Red Key and if you are pulled over and have the Red in use on Public streets the fines are much stiffer because the Red Key is for Track use only. I can neither confirm or deny this. But in the Peoples Socialist Republic Of California any thing is possible. Was just wondering if anyone else has heard of such foolishness.

Have you checked the California Motor Vehicle Code to see if the California Legislature passed a law enhancing traffic violations for drivers of Dodge Hellcats using the Red key ?

...and what, a black key with only 500hp is okay?

I can understand if the Hellcat manual explicitly says the red key fob is strictly for track use only. That might give California's legislators food for thought. But i mean come on, the car hasn't even been out for a year yet, and there haven't been any reported fatalities, car crashes, or reckless endangerment cases. What gives them the right to violate people's amendment rights to own and operate a car because of its power?

Im a hellcat charger owner and Police Officer in California.

I can confirm there is nooooooo CVC code restricting Horsepower!!! if dodge says the red key is for track only who cares. The state does not lol.

Some things are restricted and only manufactured and intended for track use. some race slicks, Nitrous (if its charged and ready to shoot and the driver has "access" to control it from the drivers seat), head light or front bumper removal on track days for cooling... etc.

bottom line... if the car passes state emissions and reg. then its all good. drive it how you want.

I will say that if the owners of these 700+HP cars which are going to be a product of the new Horsepower wars going on, start to kill people or themselves in single vehicle collisions I would not be shocked to see some sort of Comm-ifornia power regulation or top speed limit. I don't know... i mean California recently got to a point with gun laws which about say that if the rifle or shotgun "looks cool" then its not California compliant.

Thank You.....I thought it was crazy but I put nothing past this State.......And the Firearm Laws here are crazy......I had to leave my CL3 in a trust back home in Virginia when I got transferred out here......Along with several others that are not on the DOJ list as California Safety Compliant........

California.... I just don't get why you guys live there LOL... If it was true (didn't believe it for a second) I would just swap the guts of the red fob into the black.

    Not necessary :)
Put the red key in your suitcase in the trunk. Keep black key fob in your pocket. Car still acknowledges presence of red key.
( found this out traveling )
