Got the car back from the dealer today and he replaced the top hose and the clamps per the tsb. Was doing 30mph town driving 83 degrees outside. The temp of the car is 219-221 and I can smell coolant. Looked under the hood and the top hose is NOT leaking.

So..... Coolant smell could simply be from when he swapped the hoses, but I am worried about the temp.

Doesn't 219-221 in 83 degrees at 30 after 10 minutes seem rather high?

That range is normal, but the fan should be running on high at 219-221 and the temp should drop back to the low 200's pretty quick. Just make sure the fan is working. The fan is pretty loud, you can't miss it and again, the temp falls pretty fast once it kicks on.

Very stupid question, you are talking about the radiator fan correct? If so, that is fine. Is there a secondary cooling fan you are mentioning? I know for instance on my race cars we do run multiple fans in places.

In traffic, my HC gets up to 219-222 degrees routinely until the fans kick on. That is normal. Once the car is going at freeway speed (70-100 mph) it is at approx 200 to 204 degrees.

I would start to get alarmed at 240 + degrees...anything higher and I would be looking for a place to pull over and shut it down.

I would let the dealer know that you smell coolant and get their input. Some have reported the smell with the heat turned on. I don't feel that is acceptable for me as it's my daily driver and I would need to find the root cause.

The fan I am talking about is multi-speed and ramps up in several stages once temp hit 219 or so - mine sounds like a jet at full speed... I'm not sure if it runs all the time or not, but once it hit's high mode the temps come back down pretty quick - within 20 seconds or so...

I suspect the coolant smell is simply from having the top hose changed or refilling the coolant tank. I have done enough of those to know you always spill a little and it just cooks off. I will take it out this morning and run it for 20 minutes to see

9k miles and mine's never gone over 223 degrees... I'd start to worry if the fan was not coming on full blast at 219 or so and definitely if the temps got over 225 for more than a few seconds...

Really wound it out for 20 minutes just now (temp 68 degrees) never got above 201. Suspect it was just a warm day and nothing to worry about
