RAM Rebel 1500 has GIANT LETTERS, tread-pattern seats

You know the guy. Got a couple of dirt bikes and a couple of jet skis, who likes a specific brand of energy drink and isn't shy about it. He (or she) will drive a 1500 off the dealer lot and immediately turn the corner to get a dark tint or add some mud-approved tires.

Imagine if you could sell that dude all the stuff he wants to tack on right at the dealer. This is a marketer's dream: lucrative stereotyping. And the result is applying an old Chrysler name and some ate-up-with-attitude bolt ons to a 1500-series truck.

This is the 2015 RAM Rebel 1500. It's ready for your Fox Shocks stickers. It's ready for your very large soda. It's ready to do slightly more offroading than a garden-variety 1500. It's ready to let everyone for a mile behind you know what brand of truck you're driving.

If it sounds like a lot of image-conscious self-affirmation to a niche audience, well, that's exactly what it is. RAM sells something like 9 trims for the 1500: Tradesman, Express, SLT, Lone Star, Big Horn, Sport, Outdoorsman, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Laramie Limited. The Rebel sort of splits the difference between the Sport and Outdoorsman with an extra dose of powersports. They're not hard to build; RAM can screw together as many or as few as they want.

Substantively, this is is a 1500 quad cab with standard air suspension, standard aggressive off-road-friendly tires, and a 1-inch lift. You can spec either the 3.6 V6 or the 5.7 V8 Hemi. In 2WD form, you can spec a 3.92 or a 3.21 rear ratio; in 4x4 form, it's 3.92 only. Both are backed with the TorqueFlite 8-speed auto. The EcoDiesel six isn't available. It's not a Power Wagon, but it's at least as capable as any other 1500 4x4, and the mild lift, larger tires, and integral front skid plate don't hurt off-tarmac. Neither do the monotube Bilstein shocks all around.

It doesn't take more than a moment to see what's changed on the outside. Up front, the crosshair grille is gone, replaced with a huge, blacked-out split-element grille. The "RAM" badge in the center is bigger, of course. Black-powdercoated steel bumpers and a separate, removable, functional skid plate are designed for better approach angles. The bulging hood is borrowed from the Sport trim; the flares are straight off the Power Wagon. Those wheels, though, are new—and they look sharp. Black rocker paint is optional; the dual exhaust is mandatory. The massive "RAM" badge on the tailgate is monolithic: each letter is a full 5 inches high. On a clear day, astronauts could make them out clearly from orbit.

Then look inside. Designers noticed that dirt bikes have a lot of anodized aluminum parts that look neat. Voila: anodize-look red trim inside. Those 33-inch Toyo Open Country AT tires are as much about the look of super-chunky tread as they are about additional grip, so designers embossed the seat inserts with the same design as the tires. That's right: you're sitting on tire tread.

Rebel owners who want to tote around dirt bikes or ATVs are advised to get the optional RAM Boxes, which also includes the integrated bed extender which gives about 7 feet of bed to play with. Otherwise, the short box isn't long enough to close the tailgate with toys on board.

RAM starts selling Rebels in the second half of 2015.

The Bright White one looks pretty sick. I hope this RAM is a huge seller for them because it is really a versatile truck. ITs not going to appeal to anyone that is looking for a serious off-road machine, but it will certainly appeal to anyone looking for a capable and versatile 4x4. Wouldn't you know it.....we started a site for this one too :)

i read in some magazine that this is what the new front end is going to look like for next year, but for this year they are tossing it out there as a special edition...im sure it wont look the same for 2016 or 2017, but its supposed to be similar....i like the look....pretty much stole some of it from the Raptor

Dodge had an amazing new redesign 15+ years ago....ever since they have barely done a thing with the truck....it still has the same basic look......its overdue for a total redesign

not that Ford did much with their total redesign...i think it looks older than last years model...yuck!

the Dodge i like is that special edition right now orange w/ black stripes....i may have bought a Dodge pickup had i known it existed 5 months ago when we bought our GMC
