    Hi Folks,

When I decelerate, or rev the engine, there is a popping noise that comes from the exhaust. I know this is expected, the problem is my daughter asked why that happens and I realized I have no good explanation. For now, I just told her "that's the sound of awesome". ;)

So, anyone know the reason for the popping on deceleration? This is my 5th muscle car of varying types/brands, but the first to have such an aggressive exhaust, so I never had reason to research it before.

    Thanks!

Unburnt fuel cooking off in the catalytic converters :)

In similar fashion, on our sister car, the ZL1 sometimes backfires flames from the exhaust tips due to all of the unburnt fuel.

My ZL1 did the "snap, crackle, pop" much more than my cat does. My supercharged Mini Cooper even did it. I think it sounds cool.

actually it's caused mainly by the exhaust flaps which can be 90% eliminated by running Sport mode which keeps them open.. contrary to what most people think, the popping is caused by lean run misfire not rich run..

yup! the internet is FLOODED with people guessing its from unburnt fuel exploding in the exhaust pipe. but its typically caused by the sudden lean condition you get when the throttle closes and engine braking happens.

I believe these cars fire on the exhaust stroke too so there shouldnt be any unburnt fuel going into the catalytic converter

Mine actually pops more in sport and track mode....I attribute that to the trans holding gears longer and downshifting more aggressively than anything to do with the exhaust flaps.....just my personal observation..

You sure about sport mode keeping the flaps open? Mine sounds no louder in sport than it does in default

Track mode was the only one that held them open...

I think Track mode is where the flap is open. Mine sounds throatier in Track mode even at low rpm's , you can hear the difference..

Please don't make a reply read like fact when it is simply your opinion. That misleads others into believing what you say, and that you know what you're talking about.

The exhaust runs wide open in Track mode, not Sport mode.

The decel popping has absolutely zero to do with the flaps.

The answer was correctly given above. A free flowing exhaust will allow you to hear this, sometimes very loudly, especially if you have removed/gutted your cats. But even our stock exhaust, because it does flow so well, allows us to hear the popping of that momentary rich moment that causes an incomplete burn which makes the fumes ignite in the exhaust system.
