First 2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 Engine Destroyed With Just 891 Miles On The Clock

All of those reports about power being down on early examples of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 due to the ongoing break-in process (with full power to come just a few hundred miles down the road) aside, there are worse things that can happen with a new supercar engine. For example, they can lunch themselves with just 891 miles on the odometer.

Today we mourn the first known 2015 Z06 engine to die.

As reported by the gang over at a corvette forum, the owner, known to the forum as Lawdogg, was out putting miles on the car to get it properly broken in before a track event scheduled for January 10-11, 2015, at Road Atlanta. Making a pull from 35 mph, the owner says “I shifted short of redline and boom — the car began knocking. I pulled over and popped the hood. I could hear a loud knock coming from the No. 6 cylinder area along with a serious, grinding, metal-on-metal sound coming from the supercharger area.”

In other words, the engine is toast, a fact confirmed by the dealer, which noted a failure in the No. 6 cylinder valvetrain. That’s as far as the dealer got, however, as the engine is being sent back to General Motors for factory-level analysis of the failure.

Right now, it’s not clear what caused the failure, but in a brand new engine with less than 1,000 miles on the odometer, there are only a couple of major possibilities: a manufacturing defect in this particular engine; or a driver error on the upshift (accidentally shifting to first instead of third during the pull, etc.).

Whatever the cause, the outcome is clear: this Z06 needs a new engine. Fortunately, it’s covered under warranty, and will be in the car shortly.

The first 2015 Z06 engine is dead; long live the (next) 2015 Z06 engine.

Hey Abe, I got an email from Bridgette @ Chrysler yesterday apologizing for the disappointment that I am feeling. Turning my email over to the proper individuals. If I can figure out how to put it on here I will post it.

i did too! The first reply was to a letter i sent about allocations much like the one you posted, she replied that it was my rims :

My apologies, the information we had said that the Brass Monkey wheels
wouldn't be available until January, 2015. I confirmed that the dealers
are now able to order them.

At this time, I'm unsure why you haven't been assigned a VIN. I've
documented your comments and forwarded them to the appropriate parties.

Hi and thankyou for the reply Bridget.

The fact that you tell me its my rims is yet another slap in the face
    from SRT.
You must be new or have been away, but the brass monkey rims just became
available again on the 9th of Dec along with the second allocation.

They were just added to my build two weeks ago!

Is there anyone else there who can handle this complaint? I need
someone more in the loop and knows whats going on!

    Thankyou

    Dear Abram,

Thank you for contacting the SRT Customer Assistance
    Center.

I took a look at your order for the Hellcat. I tried
    to call you and
left voicemail, but just to cover all the bases, I'm
    responding to your
    e-mail as well.

Your order includes the Brass Monkey wheels which currently
    aren't
available. There's a chance that if you contact your
    dealer and ask to
have this option removed the vehicle will be assigned a VIN
    and built
sooner - if you're willing to have the vehicle built with
    the stock
    wheel option.

I hope this information is helpful.

I really wanted to make a snarky comment, but realized this could happen to any manufacturer...some more than others...but then I read your comment and laughed my butt off!:D
