Did you get it? What does it cost? I think my dealer said it was around $850

In my opinion, if you are not planning in wrecking it within the first three (3) years no need. If many people drive the car, and they maybe a little shaky, get it. Yes I know someone can hit you. I have only purchased on one vehicle that the Au Pair drove (anyone who has Au Pairs from most countries other than Europe knows what I mean). If you pay off the car fast, I do believe that a portion of the gap insurance is refundable. If you have the insurance great, for a couple of bucks you are fully protected.

I don't have it, but I don't have financing, does it matter?

I have a replacement rider that supposedly covers the cost to replace it in todays market.

It only matters if you finance, if the car is totaled and the book value is less than what you owe, you have to write a check. This insurance covers that specific situation so no check writing required.

I guess you have to find out the cost then figure how much you have down.

If you don't have a lot down its a good idea, If you have a large down payment may not be worth the cost ( your risk ratio )

If you owe less then the car is worth you don't need it.

I got it, and that's about what I paid. Wish I hadn't though for what its worth -thought to cancel it but that's only possible in first 30 days on mine and
I didn't think to do it until too late.
Most insurance companies offer a top-up coverage to cover full cost of new replacement vehicle rather than depreciated cost for the first 18 months
for about $7 extra / month

Some insurance companies offer agreed value or new car replacement. Both of those should also cover a gap.
