2015 Challenger HC. The dealer says 5-6 months. OK. The dealer says MSRP. OK. The dealer says need $5,000 down...OK.

Dealer says that $5K is non-refundable?

Hmmm...is this normal? I thought one could back out at any time short of car built/final signature (but I could be wrong)?

Go for a small down payment on order, then rest upon Vin.
I couldn't rest at night with the agreement your describing.
The process ganna be hard enough without that.

    15 Challenger HC.

Yeah, it's $5K down, no movement-and not the first I heard of a dealer doing that. My only fear is that I get strung along for 6 months to a year+ with no refund if they lag on the builds or production stops for '16. etc.

My faith in Dodge dealers has also been shaken to the core by the misinformation and shady practices lately. So a dealer says one thing...and well, who knows if it is true?

Lots of better deals around for MSRP, don't be afraid to look outside you home town, also a 1000.00 refundable deposit is the norm, get on a short dealers list that has allocation, they are around..........

Contact your DMV they hold the license for the Dealer. I dont believe they can keep the $5,000 deposit

All deposits are refundable if the dealer doesn't provide you with the car you ordered. They just don't want you to change your mind, after the order is entered.

    1. My dealer wanted $5k down at first, I explained I WOULD NOT let them BORROW $5k of my money for a car they cannot guarantee to provide, let alone a time frame. I told them all of the other SRT orders I have made with them were $1k, that's what I'd give. They accepted. Personally, I think the folks who have given $5k or $10k deposits for their orders are crazy. In theory, it makes no difference on the deal whether it's $10k or $1, but it does give the dealer an idea as to whether they want to pull the car out from under you when it comes in. That $5-$10k loan you gave them for a few months has to come back off the books to refund to you, and is a bit harder to swallow.

    2. Illegal to keep your deposit. Feel free to inform them of that. In fact, in most states, they can't even keep your deposit if you back out of the deal with the car sitting on the lot. They have a tangible good they can still sell at standard pricing structure, they are not at a loss, thus there is no cost incurred to substantiate keeping your money. However, they probably could keep the deposit until the car actually sells.

Tannehill, called them back informing them more or less what you said, and that I believe it was not legal to hold one's deposit. There was a pause and I followed up with I am ready to sign papers today if you could look into that policy, and if it is true I will take my business.

Received a call back, and they stated that they would only hold the money until the vehicle is sold. So not that bad now that some clarification has been received.

Now the big question; do I go forward with them?

And, personally, if I wanted the car badly enough, I would extend my search to outside the state. If you are willing to go over MSRP that much, then it would be more economically friendly to find a car closer to MSRP, and 1) either go get the car yourself and drive home, or 2) have the car transported. Do what is best for you, but keep your mind and options open. Good Luck!!!

At what point does alarms go off in ones head that if things start out "fuzzy", it can only get worse! don't put up with that crap! set emotions to side and realize you have the power in this negotiation. "They" have nothing but a promise of a maybe that they can get your car. No different then 100 other dealers an any givin region.. Quit asking and dictate terms baby!

Get it in writing, signed by the sales manager and general manager. Don't trust what is said over the phone. Did I mention get it in writing? And find a new dealer asap.
