My car was at a Cquatz dealer and he uses an electronic no touch meter to measure paint thickness. My car was 110 microns at the least and 165 at the most. He says all new cars he does are 90 microns, BMW, Audi, Vettes, Porsche and best is Lexus at 150 range all over. Stop and think if the manufacturer saved 10% on each car then every tenth car is painted for free. He told me the C7 Vette's he can see primer on all of them in door jamb areas. So I guess we should be happy our cars come from an old plant as he said he measured a 200 and it was 90 microns also.

I totally disagree. My HC paint is half the thickness of my 08 SRT Challenger.

The thicker the paint the easier it chips.

I'd like to get your impression after all the work is done. I know it can be expensive but if it's worth the cost then I'd do it too. Of course I need the HC to get out of D status...

Remember that automotive paint technology is constantly evolving, particularly over the past decade as environmental regulations mandate a move toward waterborne finishes and the use of other more eco-friendly production methods in the paint shop. This is having an effect not only on the thickness of factory thermocured paints, but also on their 'hardness,' orange peel and other textural issues, etc.

That is partially why many people are getting the impression that their paint is "thin" or "fragile" compared to cars they may have owned in the past. However, seeing readings on a car that indicate higher thickness than what is 'normal' can be explained in a number of ways, and aren't necessarily indicative of a miscalibrated meter. You'd be surprised at the amount of variance that can occur from manufacturer to manufacturer, plant to plant, or even production run to production run.

Say what you like. The door jambs on my BMW or Audi are far superior than the best paint you will find anywhere on my Hellcat and I've got one of the good Hellcat paint jobs!

Waterbased paint is becoming more popular, but it only applies to the basecoat (color). Sealers and clearcoats are the same as they have been. Waterborn colors do not affect hardness or orange peel in any way. That is all directly related to the clearcoat.

I have overseen the paint work on tens of thousands of vehicles. ALL manufacturers have some level of orange peel.
