On the passenger side of the engine compartment back near the hood hinge is a plunger style switch. Since there is no engine compartment light I have to wonder what this "switch" is for or even if it is a switch. I turned the ignition on and opened the hood to see if perhaps it might be a instrument cluster hood-open-warning-light, but no.

    Anyone know what this is?

It is a safety switch for remote start. It prevents remote start from working if the hood is up.

Open hood, lock car with key fob, then press and release and you will know.

    Makes sense, thank you.

Besides the hood-open remote start disable an alarm switch? Cool...

I guessed incorrectly - definitely not an alarm switch. No action whatsoever, I tried locking the car with the key fob then press and release and nothing. Then I tried hood open, press button down then lock with key fob and release button and still nothing. Maybe passive entry needs to be disabled to get this to work?

Open hood, without pressing plunger, then lock with key fob, then press plunger and release. Alarm should go off. At least for me it does.

you have to wait 16 seconds for the VTA system to fully arm before testing hood ajar switch function.

Def for the remote Starter. Safety device to prevent engine stating when working on it

I wish they had a alert or something more than a trunk open alert in front of you in cluster.
Last night somehow I forgot to close the trunk. I realized it when my speedom flashes speed and trunk lid open.
Somehow my kids or even me hit the button on the trunk or I pushed when fobik was in my pocket. Problem was I left cruise and traffic didn't allow me to either me or my wife to get out of the car.
Hard launch ensued and lid magically closed and is still latched. Awesome cars

Yes... The passive entry functionality can be turned off... the checkbox is at the bottom of the Doors & Locks screen:

Controls > Settings > Doors & Locks > Passive Entry

Here is a gotcha to pass along related to that hood switch: If you start the car with the remote start function... and then pop the hood... the engine will instantly shut down. Which is kind of embarrassing if you are in the middle of showing the damn thing off to someone. :/

Embarrassing is right. That exact scenario happened to me. Took me a bit to realize what had happened.
