OK, does anyone have any more information regarding the oil capacity increase for the 2017 cars? Someone posted elsewhere about '17 cars going to 7 quarts of oil and the only difference between these cars and earlier models is that they received a different dipstick that shows the correct/altered full capacity line. No difference in oil pans, or anything like that suspidedly. Only a different dipstick. Does this mean earlier cars were/are running a quart low (it never made sense to me that the hellcat has less oil capacity than a 392 car, especially with the cooler system)? Didn't see anything listed on this elsewhere.
This is odd as hell, I guess if it mattered on the 15/16 they would put out a bulletin. I'm sticking with 6 until dodge says different. More oil for the internals to slosh around will just rob hp if it's not needed. (Old turbo Buick logic)
For right this minute I'm sticking with 6 quarts as well. But, I'm really expecting a TSB or something from Dodge saying to step up to the 7 quarts and given a new dipstick real soon. I can't see how they wouldn't. If nothing else has changed, and the car needs 7, it should get 7.
Well, that's a whole other capacity in itself then So, there's 6, 7, and now 7.5? Gggrrreeeaaattt. Well, anything over 6 quarts in my car registers as over full on the dipstick in my car. Had the dealer recently change the car's oil as well, and the tech who's also a friend, showed me right in the system that it calls for 6 quarts, because even before I became aware of this '17 change for '17, I was bother that the system held less fluid than my previous 392s and 6.1s did.
Mine was built on 8/15/16 and the owners manual says 6 quarts. When I changed it,6 quarts brought the oil level to the top of the fill mark on the dipstick.
The only thing that changed was the dipstick for MY17. It may be some time though before anything official about an update comes from FCA.
It's not an issue though as validation of oil level for all vehicles requires 2 quarts low through 1 qt high to pass all dynamic maneuvers a vehicle can do and dyno testing for aeration. MY17 just carries more oil which makes it theoretically a good move for people who never check their oil level between changes. You know who you are.
I check mine every time I get in the car. In fact, you have a gauge inside the car. It's marked as "oil pressure". If it reaches 0, it means you have none.
June 2016 production here. just changed my oil yesterday and put in 6 quarts- dipstick shows full when in fully operational oil temps (180+). Subscribed, case you find more info.
Also, mine was built 11/16 and oil capacity is 7qts Photobucket
Maybe someone can check part #s of oil pans between 16 and 17? Can't see how changing the dip stick will change capacity. I'm still going to stop at 6 and check
Same engine and everything doesn't make much sense. We need to verify if the oil pan hasn't changed, Otherwise it seems like they are hoping 15 warranties end before problems occur. Being 1 quart low won't cause engine failure in a few years but could turn a 250-300k mile car into a 100k mile car before major engine failure.
I literally see no reason for them to add a quart in the manual for 2017's + but say 2015/2016's need the same.
