Since everyone seems to really enjoy a visual of what is going on I did this RRT on a 392 today. This is what they are looking for. We are checking the crimps on the end tanks.

Here is the tool that is supplied:

If that tool goes on smooth the radiator is fine. If that tool is hard to put over any of the crimps the radiator needs replaced.

Here is an example of a good spot of the radiator. The tool slips over nice and smooth very little effort:

Here you can see it wants to go over but I need to really force the tool on to the crimps....almost needs a tap with a hammer. If it does this anywhere on the crimps the radiator is replaced:

Here is a video of the old radiator I have it on a high spot and try to move it up and down the crimp:

And here is the new radiator as you can see the tool easily slides down that crimp with little to no effort:

Now everyone is educated on what is going on.

    Thanx NX91Notch

Do you know if there is a basic setting for the SBC valve and a way to check that it closes fully for max boost?

Interesting. So are you saying that the bar with those crimp points are defective when put on the radiator, or something happens to them so that tool doesn't fit? They expand or separate somehow?

Any idea why these are splitting? Bad design or bad batch?

It sounds as if the first big run of production radiators the end tanks did not get crimped properly. That's what this tool is checking. If it was crimped fully it goes on smooth. If the crimp didn't fully seat this tool won't fit.

It looks as if all the premature radiator failures where blowing off the end tanks cause the crimps where not fully seated.

Maybe a TSB to check the crimp is coming?

    An RRT is a TSB.

So we don't need it to actually leak to bring it in and check the crimp correct?

No it does not have to be leaking. If your car is within the build dates listed the radiator needs to be checked. Leak or no leak.

I guess I'm ok, since they replaced my radiator about a month ago. I was one of the early ones that had a small leak, no splitting, just a small leak.
