Growing up in the West, the difference between the octanes was always .08-.10 cents.
In other areas it seems to vary.
I've noticed in the Southeast it's the worst. It's generally around .25 cents between octane grades.
Meaning that Premium is .50 cents a gallon more than Regular Unleaded.

I understand gas prices vary depending on what part of the country you are in due to taxes and so forth (or just plain price gouging for those in California, etc. where they know they can gouge you just because you live in certain states), but the price between the octanes should remain the same .10 cents no matter shouldn't it? The base price for regular unleaded changes based on where you are and the mid grade and premium is then adjusted up the .10 cents each based on that?
It's weird to me that, for example, you could pay .10 cents a gallon more for Regular Unleaded in Phoenix than you would in New Orleans, but in New Orleans you would pay .30 cents a gallon more than you would in Phoenix for Premium.
Anybody know why it varies so much between the octanes depending on the part of the country you are in?

It's price gouging plain and simple they get rid of all the smaller local refineries and raise the price due to more transportation cost. They know most all of the higher performance engines need 91 octane minimum so we should have to pay more for better performance we can afford it after all they are the ones losing money. Awful strange the price of oil to lube you car hasn't come down by half, $30 for a 40 gallon barrel but we are still paying 7 to 8 bucks a quart whats up with that?

10 cent difference between grades use to be the norm here until about 10 yrs ago....about the same time most of the stations here began to have "premium for the price of midgrade Fridays". Coincidence? LOL...

    I know! stinks........

How do you really know what you are getting from the hose when they have one hose and 3 different grades dispensed from it?

I try and purchase my premium from stations that have separate hoses for each type of fuel, true could be from the same tank but I feel better about it.

Or if the tanker driver filled up the wrong tank??????

Yes at least $.40 difference here. Just another in the parade of ripoffs these days.

I just filled up today. $0.80 difference per gallon between 87 and 93.

I also remember it not being long ago when it was 10 cents per grade. Now the norm is 20 cents per grade in Michigan. There are a few stations at 15 cents.

Even worse here in upstate NY... .75 cents or so a gallon. The price separation/gap seem to wisen after the first huge price spikes in 2008. The prices come down but they keep the separation...

I know someone who owns a small independent Gas Station. They have told me they pay the same price for 87/89/93.

Yo driver72 what you are refering to in retail gas is called "the spread" lowest price to highest price. the lowest price is set by the company now days mid range gas and premium gas retail is set by market value and other local gas stations. Station managers or owners will jack up the price of mid range and premium if they can get away with it. Supply & demand runs the whole "ting"
