I'm driving my cat down to Tampa on Sunday for some work at Presidential which is about a seven hour drive. Picked up three rolls of the green rustoleum automotive painter's tape to wrap up the front end against chips at Autozone today.

Looking for advice about how to apply the tape and where to apply. Want to make sure the tape doesn't blow off/peel up. Plan to cover the front and hood but anywhere else to apply. First time tape applicator.

    Thanks,

    Akula

protip to reduce the chance of any of the glue sticking to the bumper, lightly put it on your pair of pants and it'll pull excess glue of the tape. Won't change it's effectiveness sticking to the bumper. But you sometimes notice some sections of the tape have more glue then the rest and that excess will stick to the bumper when you peel it off.

That's a long drive, you might get tired & make a mistake. Soooooo, stop @ the Wildwood exit & I'll be glad to drive her in the rest of the way just to play it safe .................... ;)

Lay it down like shingles overlapping a bit but from back to front and make sure you don't plug up cooling holes on the front (If the tape comes loose). Use scissors for a clean cut. I used 3M blue. Did a 2 hr drive to my clear bra installer with no issue.
I did the front and 1/4 hood and behind all wheels. FYI, I now have rock guards and 3M film behind the tires.

And some cooking spray behind the rear wheels will make it easier to clean off the burnt rubber!

if you want your car to remain perfect then a clear bra is what you need....putting painters tape on it every time you drive it long distance is just silly....why not just rent a car?

He's driving it to get Xpel & C.Quartz applied & didn't want the nose to get chipped along the way there. LOADS of traffic and crappy road surface + a 40 mile construction zone along the stretch of I-75 he needs to drive.

You should always go with a quality installer over proximity. The painter's tape is a great idea to get temporary protection until the PPF is installed.

This is insane. If I had seen this, I would have recommended Chris Kelley in Orlando. He is the man! I know a lot of guys with high end cars; most regret the bra over time. My most trusted advisor on these issues, told me to just have bumper repainted in a few years if I pickup a lot of chips. The bra is trading one problem for another. Don't keep it on more than three years if you want any hope of ever getting it off clean.

After last weekend, I've learned: Painter's tape goes over the license plates... & it works...
