When tracking a car that has been placed on a railcar for shipment, is the railcar number provided? The reason that I ask is that I have access to railcar tracing.

my dealer gave me the rail car number. SRT told me they didn't have that info. it has 4 initials followed by 6 numerals, such as ETTX710061.

CSX is 800 235 2352 for automated locator. just follow the directions. it'll first ask you to specify location or weight. just say "location." then it asks for the initials. then asks for the numbers. most times the name of the location can be found on a map, such as Sarnia, Ontario (about 50 miles north of Detroit, and a chunk west of Brampton). other times, it might be an abbreviation that you can't find on any map. every 20 minutes it has updates on location, I believe.

please just remember to hang up after you get your location or it goes to a live human who is a little bit pissed that somebody is bugging them for that.

cars that run to the west coast seem to go right along I-80 after they get past Chicago. someone more familiar with rail routes and railyards can probably let you know the routes for other areas of the country. that way you can just follow along on a map if you'd like to.
