This Sunday, I drove up the Angeles Crest Highway in Southern California to the Mount Wilson Observatory with my car club. By the way, the Angeles Crest Highway is one of the best driving roads in the country and is packed with motorcycles and driving enthusiasts on the weekends.

Anyway, once in the parking lot at the top of Mt Wilson, and after shutting off the car, I was dead in the water. The car would no longer recognize that a key FOB was present, couldn't lock or unlock the doors or truck remotely, or start the car. Even tried holding the key FOB up to the Start/Stop button.

After trying to diagnose the situation and ruling out stuff like a dead battery, we looking across the parking lot at the huge television, radio and microwave transmission towers. I was told that Mt Wilson has one of the highest concentration of Radio Frequency waves anywhere. One of the other club members had '08 SRT Charger and couldn't open his doors remotely.

We tried to figure out what to do, including maybe having to get my car towed off the mountain. One of the guys suggested trying to shield the dash and key FOB with aluminum foil. I thought maybe this guy was a tin-foil-hat type and was skeptical but, I had nothing to lose. I used my windshield sun reflector as a shield and.....it worked. The car started and I drove off the mountain.

This needs to be reported to FCA, call SRT and if they get you no where call your dealer and fill them in to report it

I've always wondered why they don't have an emergency code system like my ducati to start the car incase your fob battery was dead and you didn't have an extra battery handy. All I do on my bike is punch it in and it will start without the key. Can only do it a few times but it's better than nothing.

Say you lose the fob or something? Then what?

I actually called FCA this morning and reported it. The FCA rep said that she had not heard of anyone reporting this previously.

On the older Challengers with push button, the antenna is stuck to the underside of the dash above the radio. So if you get in a jam, that would be a good place to try and hold the remote.

Happens all the time to me (with other vehicles not the Hellcat yet.) Glad you had a solution.

Something else to e aware of, a widely available $33 GPS jammer.
Thiefs use this when stealing a vehicle to prevent detection

For sale over the Internet, the jammer emits 200 mW and plugs directly into a vehicle’s cigarette lighter (see photo).

Increasing use of GPS jamming and spoofing to cover both licit and illicit activities is likely, given the general public’s desire for privacy and the general lack of awareness of how devastating GPS jamming can be.Currently most jammers are not even detected; we simply have an unidentified GPS outage.

May be a silly question, what happens if the battery in your key dies. Does the car still recognize the key when it's in the car. I assume so...

Mine occasionally does this. The door won't open until 3 or 4 attempts or I just press the unlock button. The most annoying is when the car won't start claiming it cannot detect the key fob. Usually starts after 2 or 3 attempts and I have no idea why it does this sometimes. The battery is good, and I've had this occur with both red keys. Because I can't get it to happen only one in long while, I know if I take it in, they dealer will just say they can't reproduce the problem. and why doesn't this car have a manual option to start?!?!

The way these work if key fob battery dead, if I'm not mistaken, you place it near the starter or somewhere then use the starter button as norm. (Just unsure where without going back through the manual.)
