I found in the owners manual a recommendation that if the car is to be stored for an extended period that the negative battery cable should be disconnected. If I go away for vacation I always like to take any power out of any car stored inside to limit any fire hazard. Now the question I have is since the only way I see to open the trunk is by power then what happens if the trunk is closed with the battery cable disconnected. How do you open it now? Maybe it will not latch if disconnected? I would hate to be the guinnea pig and try this.

I would think that simply pulling the IOD fuse is the answer. Ignition off draw.

You can use the key to open the trunk, at least on the Charger. Should be able to do so on the Challenger also. Same with the doors. Always a mechanical fail safe in the event of power disruption.

No key hole in Challenger trunk.

Fold down the back seat from inside and pull the emergency latch.

Hmm. At least I think I opened it with a key once just to see. I'm not in front of it now so maybe I'm wrong.

If the battery cable is disconnected and the trunk is closed, you can:
    (1) unlock the car manually with the key in the driver door,
    (2) fold down the back seat
    (3) pull the trunk release

Also, the owners manual mentions about tire pressures and fluids etc regarding storage.

I do not see a key hole in trunk either. Good thought on rear seat entry. Will try not to latch trunk. Still wondering if it will even latch with power disconnected.

Just kidding. Any time I am away I like to try and lower fire risks. We have all seen stories of cars going up in flames for electrical malfunctions.

unlock doors, open trunk, remove negative cable, close trunk.

    go on vacation

come back from vacation, open door, open hood, stick battery charge on battery jump terminal and ground.

    Use remote to open trunk

Really? Only car fire stories I've ever heard are while or immediately after being driven, never in storage. Does this really happen?

A friend of mine is building a new house right now for people who had been on vacation for nearly two weeks when their BMW caught fire in their garage. Kind of scary! The fire station is only about 1/2 mile away from the house, but the fire took out the entire house. There was nothing left by the time they got there.
