i was at the drag strip yesterday and the tech guy told me the rules for nhra and or ihra are changing for 2016. He said mustangs, camaros, challengers, corvettes and such will be mandated to use a rollbar. He said he thought it was for a 8 point cage. He said it was for the cars like hellcats and such with the high horse power. Has anyone heard of this? The guy builds chassis for race cars so I know he is somewhat of a reliable source but not sure if he is correct on this matter. I sure hope not as I am not going to put a cage in my car just to run it a few times a year.

    UPDATE
Just spoke with a rep from NHRA. He said the rules are the same for 2016 as they were for this year. If you run slicks and are faster then 11.5 then you need a roll bar. So dot drag radials should be fine.

Haven't seen rule book for 16 , but they'd be shooting themselves in the foot with a rule change like that. New Stock Muscle cars are over engineered to be near idiot proof and crash tested vs older cars. These new muscle cars are their future, to harass them will further reduce car counts on test and tune night. If you race them in a regular program, then you have to set up to safety standards.

I agree with Paul on this. But I also see these cars going pretty fast in stock form. I can see both sides on this. I just hope it we can still run without the cage.

    Interesting.

SECTION 4A: SUPER PRO, PRO, SPORTSMAN, FRAME: 4, ROLL CAGE, (Page 5) A Rroll cage is mandatory in cars running 10.99 (*6.99) or quicker or any car exceeding 135 mph. In full-bodied cars, with unaltered firewall, floor, and body (from firewall rearward, wheeltubs permitted), running between 10.00 (*6.40) and 10.99 (*6.99), roll bar permitted in place of roll cage. In convertibles running 10.99 or quicker or exceeding 135 mph, roll cage mandatory.

It seems like there are some guys on this forum that are running faster than this and do not have a cage. I have read and heard that it depends on the track officials. I have ran 10.99 and only had to have a snell rated helmet which they check for during tech inspection.

My understanding is for a m y 2015 vehicle you can run 10.51 with no cage.

Quick question: How are side curtain airbags effected by roll cages or bars?...

Not interested in a cage or bar that could interfere with manufacture's safety equipment in the event of a side impact on the street. Maybe your insurance company as well?...

Those types of factory safety items are why the rules let you run 10.00 with no roll bar now. No official word on any changes next year.

Good to know there is nothing official yet. This tech guy called me out once on my roll bar and what he recited to me was almost word for word with the nhra rules. So when he told me this news I took his word for it. Hope it doesn't happen.
