Years ago I was in traffic court and saw a guy get a week in jail for doing 105 mph. I live in NY and checked the DMV site. 40 mph over the speed limit is 11 points which is the limit to suspend your license.

    What are other state's rules?

They have loosen up here a bit in Wisconsin, but depend on where and when you get caught in a High speed. I would not want to get a 40+ in a school zone.

In Illinois anything more than twenty over is considered reckless driving driving, and is a misdemeanor.

The reason I know this is because 5 years ago, two days before I was going to Bonnevile I was caught doing 104 in a 55.

The officer was nice enough to let me follow him to the station where I was fingerprinted, mug shot and had to post bail. (I still went to Bonnevile)

Knowing the laws can make you think twice. I read about guys driving at speeds that would put them in a whole lot of trouble. Thought maybe someone could benefit from this string. Thanks for sharing.

Holy cow! 20 mph over is all it takes? I have got to get a good radar detector... Thanks for this post.

I think 20 over here in CAL is reckless driving as well. It is not unheard of for the officer to only write the violator for 20 over, even if going faster. Courtesy and respect can help soften the citation somewhat.

    I agree Snappy,

Be polite and admit what you did and maybe the officer will take it easy on you!
He could have had my car towed, but let me follow him to the station. I am pretty sure I was going more than 104 because he said we will say that you were going 104 because if you were 50 over it becomes a felony.

Respect and courtesy goes a long way!

I have no and don't want a personal experience with this but looked up Michigan and it's nowhere near as harsh as all above. 4 points for drag racing not 6 like wreckless.

Reckless Driving in Virginia is a class 1 misdemeanor.

    Plus Radar detectors are illegal.

    Oh boy here we go.......

First of all how is it possible that you can even keep up with the fastest quickest and best color???

Second let's say I miss a gear, because I actually have to drive my car. Not just step on the gas and maybe play with some paddles! I would still look cool driving such a sinister color. Not like you, who would look like you just left a carnival with a s#*% load of cotton candy.
