It's about the size of a credit card and costs about $60, but the humble CANtact can hack into your car.

The small device, built by Eric Evenchick, serves as a sort of hub between a computer and your car's on-board diagnostic computer. From the device's interface, you can control windows, brakes, service lights, and more.

Evenchick is proclaiming his device to be a security solution for cars, helping users find cybersecurity vulnerabilities that aren't readily evident even when you use more expensive existing devices. The diagnostics can also be done with simple Python codes instead of more complicated readouts available on most devices. CANtact only works for the kinds of security vulnerabilities that can be accessed with the on-board computer, not via remote attacks.

Evenchick is creating a Github library of scripts with the hope of building a software library for would-be car hackers to share their discoveries. He told Wired he made the device not for malicious purposes, but so people could be more aware of the stuff happening inside cars that otherwise seems invisible.

I just checked today. Six months since the article was posted. This guy's Github account has no mention of the project. But his colleague from Hackaday posted up something at normaldotcom/CANtact ยท GitHub. You'll need to be a software/hardware tinkerer to dabble I expect.
