Chrysler recalls 1.4 million hackable cars - Jul. 24 2015

Looks like FCA is taking it more seriously now. The Article is confusing.

"But Chrysler said Friday that the recall provides unspecified "additional security features independent of the network-level measures."

Does this mean that they changed even more stuff from the patch we ourselves installed or are we ok if we installed the patch?

I doubt any different that the update, what else could they do? This is a software issue for sure and the update should be all that is required. Unless there is yet another update. Save yourself a trip to the dealer and do it yourself.

Looks like this is in addition to the previously recommend update. Which I have already installed.

This has probably been asked and answered somewhere, but what's involved in actually getting an update? I know you can use a USB but do you download the update from somewhere or get it from the dealer? Thanks.

The link to the FCA recall that includes 2015 Challengers and Chargers.
    http://www.media.chrysler.com/newsr...CDD867980CBF57056F21890F4A5EA9?&id=16849&mid=

To help with the technicalities of FCA's bolded summary of the situation, I am providing my translation for the group:

The software manipulation addressed by this recall required unique and extensive technical knowledge (please forget all of the news stories of bad guys using unique and extensive technical knowledge to hack everything from government websites to financial databases, etc.) , prolonged physical access to a subject vehicle (the bad guys would have to buy one of 1.4 million affected vehicles, and we are sure they don't have the money to do that) and extended periods of time to write code (or they could just steal the code that exists, or get a jump start from the presentation of the flaw at the Black Hat Conference next month.)

No defect has been found (Have no fear, from our taking 9 months to issue a patch, to our initial silence regarding the importance of the patch, to our contradictory statements this week as to what cars are affected, our heads are still firmly planted up our asses). FCA US is conducting this campaign out of an abundance of caution (bad press).

I updated my 2014 Durango with out any issues. Put in my VIN, downloaded the software to a USB drive, and then uploaded the new firmware. Took less than 30 mins total....

Don't forget the step where you run the downloaded file to the thumb drive otherwise the car will not recognize it. ;-)

So you just put the USB in the car and it knows what to do or is there an update section in the settings somewhere?

    I like this...

Affected are certain vehicles equipped with 8.4-inch touchscreens among the following populations:
    • 2013-2015 MY Dodge Viper specialty vehicles
    • 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups
    • 2013-2015 Ram 3500, 4500, 5500 Chassis Cabs
    • 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee SUVs
    • 2014-2015 Dodge Durango SUVs
    • 2015 MY Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans
    • 2015 Dodge Challenger sports coupes
Dodge Charger sedans and Challenger sport coupes. They don't make Charger coupes or Challenger sedans. I hate it when they use unnecessary words. Charger and Challenger is sufficient.
