If you haven't seen already, this article is making its rounds today.
Hackers Have the Power to Remotely Hijack Half a Million Chrysler Cars

This is a serious flaw in the Uconnect system that allows Hackers to remotely take over control of your Uconnect vehicle. They mention a Cherokee specifically but all 2015 Uconnect seem to be vulnerable. Chrysler has released a patch that is supposed to plug the vulnerability and it can be installed with a usb stick.

You can download the patch here: Uconnect Software Update - Update your Uconnect System

    Pretty scary.

For non-IT Admins or people who aren't good with tech

The loop-hole is basically your car is connected to the internet which isn't a bad thing, The issue is that it's basically unsecured. The patch solves this and should be done ASAP. Grab a USB stick or if you aren't comfortable doing that (It's literally impossible to mess up) then go to the dealer.

Anyone have the file to put on the USB stick? Everytime I try to enter my VIN, it gives me an error - in all 3 web browsers...

That would be much appreciated. IE won't even install that stupid Akamai installer. Gives me some error code. I sent the UConnect team an email, voicing my displeasure of their 'programming' team :D

Did mine. Cluster F. Download software is a joke. Doesn't work. Did direct download but even that didn't load right. So file has to be only thing on USB stick and not in a folder.

Yeah, the downloader they make you install is worthless. I downloaded the file directly (there is a link at the bottom of the last page). Double click the download and point the installation to the USB stick. As stated above, needs to be nothing else on the stick.

Doesn't this only affect cars that are using their internet service? "Uconnect access" is what I think it's called. And isn't that completely optional? I don't want my car connecting to the internet... so that's the first thing I'm going to get disabled, if I have to.

EDIT: ok... it looks like you get a 12 month trial... but have to register to activate.... which I'll never do.

I updated yesterday, XM radio sounds a bit better now.

Just download the direct file and unzip it. Put the unzipped file on a usb stick with nothing else on it and plug it in to your car. Car has to be in the run position then follow screen prompts. Worked great for me.

Even if you don't use unconnect access you still want to use the patch, it patches other things.

Doesn't matter if you turn the service on or not. Your car still connects to the Internet. It's not likely a feature you can turn off. Think of it like your cell phone, even if you don't active it, it can still send and receive data over the cellular network. Our cars have a pretty much constant 3G cellular connection which can be exploited if not properly secured. This patch will handle this one particular exploit, but be assured there will be more. Our cars are almost as much computer as mechanical, so we will have to deal with these problems from time to time. This is one of those vulnerabilities where the risk of being exploited is low, but the impact of it if it is exploited is high, so your residual risk remains low. Sorry...My day job is bleeding over here into what supposed to be my fun hobby...

    Oh, Absolutely!

Just saying I don't want my car talking to the Internet. As someone that has worked in IT security... the last thing I want to do is be playing cat and mouse games on patching vs. zero-day vulnerabilities with my car.

If it doesn't connect to the internet... then I don't have to worry about someone using those vulnerabilities to steal the car, or something worse.
