Their stock dropped 23% yesterday. It amazes me that anybody could think that was a good business decision (installing software to do such a thing). It will be interesting to see what heads roll at VW corporate. Too bad too because automotive and light duty diesels have come so far since GM fiasco and now they are getting tarnished again due to VW.

VW makes good diesels. They should have addressed the root cause of the issue from the start.

Ya I mean really. They're facing up to 17B fines in US at fed level, excluding state and private actions. Then there's the UK and everywhere else. And doing this crap when you just took pole position from Toyota at the global level.

(Sure hope FCA keeps it's nose clean...)

It will get negotiated down and the lawyers will profit from it.
While interesting, does not concern me. As long as my Hellcat passes the program here in WI in a year or two when I get checked.

So what I wonder is this - What percentage of environmentally conscious tree huggers that bought these VWs would willingly return their vehicle to the dealer for a retrofit that would lower their MPG and power? I bet a very small percentage.

yes - vw totally screwed up, but at least no one died. you cant say that about the toyota accelerator screw up. i think vw will get past this. just caused embarrassment and poor business practice, not death.

They may get past this, but it's going to be years if not decades to recover. The reason behind all of this was to enhance the cars performance, which otherwise was going to be very docile when running clean. I don't see the CEO keeping his job. Shareholders are going to demand someone pay.

And car owners either those for emissions or performance plus good emissions.

I'm gonna stir the pot here. How many have modifications and aftermarket tunes on their cars? Is that really any different from what VW did? I am in no way condoning what VW did...on the contrary. Just try to answer the question as to why it is "OK" to do this via the aftermarket.
