Took a trip to AZ today and got 23.3 mpg. That's cruising at 85 with AC on. My question is why do we have a gas guzzler tax? My non-gas guzzler 392 with MDS got about the same mileage, maybe a little less.

Good question. I went on a road trip this weekend and the console showed 26.6 mpg ave. That was in 500 hp and eco mode, using the cruise control and driving 70-80 mph.

The government needs to abolish the Gas Guzzler Tax completely.

    I posted this past February:
The GAS GUZZLER TAX is wrong and a big rip off to all Hellcat owners
i personally feel FCA must go to the EPA and demand a REFUND for all Hellcats sold!!!! How FCA got conned into the GAS GUZZLER TAX is beyond me. I own both Hellcats (Charger, Challenger) and they get a minimum of 18 MPG to 20 MPG. And this is combined heavy traffic and highway. And for the record if you are in the real world this is not from the recommended driving limit. The Washington DC metro area and beltway is a very fast paced area. The average speed in this area is probably more like 70 plus. If each and every Hellcat owner drove his vehicle to the new AUTONOMOUS car scenario.obeying every posted road sign......etc (and I don't know about u but yikes...riding as a passenger how stupid r we getting). Anyways the fuel mileage would even be better. This is such an obvious insult to all Hellcat owners who have been rippied off. And I would be willing to venture the EPA personnel assigned to do the road testing drove the HELLCAT in not such a real world manner. I used this picture in another posting and feel this is probably more suitable to this as well.

EPA TESTING FOR GAS GUZZLER TAX

And to add insult to injury all these so called gas savers beater cars don't ever get the so called posted MPG. At least that's been my experience. And if u go to the Tesla web site (which I believe they removed this) u can put the Tesla into real world driving. When u adjust the outside tempature, A/C vs Heat, passengers, gear and speed the projected ELECTRIC distance drops dramatically. So you really have to wonder who was driving these so called gas savers and Electric vehicles for there posted MPG. And here is a picture of the EPA PERSONELL assigned to those vehicle tests.

In summing it up I think all Hellcat owners must (which I know this will be extremely painful) drive your car obeying to the utmost perfection (AUTONOMOUS like) posted road signs and manners. And after one tank of fuel burned report to EPA head command center true HELLCAT MPG!!! This is extremely important to do and if you are a TRUE HELLCAT loving, caring, passionate MOPAR forever believer you have to do this to show our Country how we the innocent highest, most powerful production car owners have been screwed. For all who have read this thank you for reading this lengthy post!!!!

    But unfortunately the Hellcat loses:
Looking at the 2016 Gas Guzzler Guidelines we are rated at 16 MPG combined which does put the gas tax on us. And we fall short by 2 MPG since passenger vehicles must be at least 18 with the exception of E85 cars which get a pass on the gas guzzler tax. Which that just reinforces my original posting we are GETTING RIPPED OFF So for all HELLCAT members we are the proud payers of BIG GUY regulation to help the future cars be ELECTRIC. Think about that how we are helping bring an end to our FUN. And yeah I know Marchionne says it isn't going to happen any time soon getting rid of the V-8's. But when he leaves which will be sooner than later the new leader will cave to the investors (stock holders) and by by MUSCLE gas power!!!!!

I don't see how anyone is getting 10 mpg in these let alone 18-26!!

    I must have a heavy foot!

Sometimes it says 11 but that only lasts a few miles!;)

I suppose if traveling long distance at 70 mph it's possible. But dam! How does one only drive it 70 mph? LOL :p

It has to meet the standards in a very specific test protocol. Besides, they(EPA) have accurate measurements for fuel flow. The in dash fuel economy gauges from FCA are notoriously inaccurate. When I hand calculate the fuel mileage in my Ram or Hellcat, the dash gauge reads about 2-3 more mpg than I really get from hand calculating.

The reason is the government has to rip someone off to pay for all their crap so it may as we'll be us. Hillary will fix it I am sure. She loves car people.

Made a post yesterday. Last weeks road trip (430 miles one way) netted 25.9 mpg cruising in street mode @ 75 mph.

While this beast can chug the go juice, it will also sip it while cruising on the open roads.

Gas Guzzler Tax makes no sense

Gas guzzler tax is really luxury tax for sports cars. They don't charge it on vehicles that get worse mileage such as most trucks and some SUVs.
