    Hey guys,

I've been around this forum and other forums reading up on the subject of wider rear tire installations. Honestly I am a bit of a noob at this as I've been a bike guy most of my life and know jack shit about performance car handling. I got lost with all the size numbers and whether I'd need wider rims too.I owned my 392 Charger for about 7 months now and there are instances where it gets out of a control a little and the rear end kicks. Because of that I have traction mode on Street and the rest of the settings on Street mode most of the time. I hardly ever touch Sport, let alone ridiculously wander to Track mode ( hello side curb :D )

Needless to say, I need a step by step guide to the best brand of tires, number (sizes), and overall installation. Keeping in mind I have a good amount budget to go with. All I know is that I want better stability, better performance, and overall better grip / handling to put that near 500 bhp down.

    Thanks a lot!

I have 305/35/20 on the rears on stock rims if that's what you were wondering. Lots of sticky tires in that size out there so lots to choose from, I have all seasons because I drive it all year round and my best 0-60 on those is 4.3 so I'm sure 3.9 is possible on radials or stickys.

I have to say that gives the rear end an even better and meaner look!

Would tires that size affect the gearbox at all? As in the time it takes to spin the tire round itself will take longer than the stock tires compared to what the computer is acustomed to. Any issues with gearing at all?

Actually it is just the opposite effect. The 305s are shorter than the 275s so they spin faster. But no reported issues with the computer or traction control.

That's good to hear, like I said I'm a noob at tires and I get confused between the last two numbers of tire size.

What manufacturer are your rear tires? And do you recommend I do it for the front tires too?

I have factory tires on my car. When dealing with tires go to TIRERACK and look up the tires on the manufacturer spec sheets. In that table you can find the tire size you are looking at. The table will include recommended rim width, tire diameter. Smaller diameter, shorter tire, spins faster. This way you can look at different manufacturer tables and compare Tire company A size against Tire company B size. Not all tires of the same size are exactly the same.

Alright will do! I've been recommended Tirerack before and had a look at it but your detailed explanation just made some things clearer. Thanks a lot for your input! You have been a ton of help and I really appreciate it! :)

    basics are... STOCK SIZE: 275-40-20

first number is width in milimeters (for stock, 275mm, a little over 11 inches)
second number is ratio of tire width to sidewall height (for stock, 40 or 40% of the 275mm)
third number is the rim size (stock is 20 inches)

So a wider tire with a lower profile (ratio) can be just about the same overall diameter
i.e. a 275-40-20 is just about the same overall diameter as a 245-45-20

Excellent size comparator here, will show you size differences and clearance changes:

Custom rims, wheel tire packages for your ride - RIMSnTIRES.com

Tirerack shows recommended rim widths for every tire and
305/35-20s I looked at all recommend 10" -12" rim width.

The link above gives tire rim width of 9 1/2 - 11 1/2" for 305/35-20
