I went today to get a quote on getting Xpel on my front bumper, I asked the guy that installs Xpel if he did vinyl because I was considering wrapping the hood in flat black. He said yes but it won't protect the paint because the vinyl is so thin that if a rock hits it the rock will go write through the vinyl. But he said Xpel makes a mat covering and since the car is black it will look mat black and protect the paint. So If you have a green car it will make the hood look mat green and so on.

Has anyone seen this mat Xpel? Did anyone do it?

Yes that is what the Xpel guy said it won't make your flat black hood look shiny.

Have not seen it on a car but it sounds really cool from the site description. The way they talk about it sounds as though it would make any paint job appear matte. I'd guess "matte" and "satin" might look a bit different for those with satin hoods.

You could buy a foot of it from the site for $24 and apply it to the hood to see what it looks like before dropping the big bucks to have a pro do it for real. I don't have the satin hood but if I did that would be the route I'd take before fully committing. I wouldn't decide just viewing OPP (other people's pics).

Keep us updated as you proceed!

    Thanks busa,

I didn't know I could order it, I will order a foot today.

I don't have a satin hood either, I order mine with it but my dealer said dodge put a stop to the satin hoods at one point because they couldn't paint them fast enough, and if I wanted the car sooner I should drop it. So I am hoping this will give me the satin look and protect the hood.

Just watched the video at the bottom of the link you sent me and they turn a black challenger into a satin black challenger by wrapping it.

Thanks busa! I'm ordering the front bumper and mirrors in clear, and the hood in Matt, I'll send pictures when it is done.

You're welcome. I did a lot of research prior picking the protective wrap for my cat and am happy to share.

Are you applying it yourself? I've always used approved installers and, having watched several cars being wrapped, would not try it myself. I don't have the skill and if there are any impurities left on the paint or if the piece of wrap has to be lifted and reattached it won't look good (bubbles and wrinkles).

I am going to have the same guys tint the windows, I just can't decide how dark to make them? I want people to be able to see me, but I don't want it to light? I was deciding between 20% and 35%?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks Fast Cat,

That is what I was leaning towards but I think the 20% on a black cat would look sinister.

No matter which I choose, I am sure the next day I will be saying I made the wrong choice! LOL
