It looks like you'll lease Tesla's home battery instead of buying it
We already knew, thanks to Elon Musk, that Tesla was working on big, energy-efficient batteries for businesses and households using the same technology from its electric cars.

Now, more information about the concept is trickling out ahead of an official announcement scheduled for later this week.

The batteries, which could help power homes during blackouts and pull in energy from the sun to save on energy costs, will be leased to consumers instead of being available for purchase, according to a report in The Guardian on Monday.

Tesla's home battery will reportedly be available as a leasing option from renewable energy company SolarCity, a company for which Musk sits on the board. The details from an analyst come ahead of Tesla's press event on Thursday, when the company is rumored to officially launch the large utility-scale batteries.

As a part of a pilot program — 300 homes in California are currently testing the battery — the analyst said one customer paid $1,500 upfront and $15 per month for access to the home battery. The customer will continue to make payments for a 10-year period and then return the battery to SolarCity, according to the report. Apple are reportedly already using Tesla battery backup systems at their headquarters, and Walmart is testing a Tesla battery at 11 retail stores in the region as well.

Musk first confirmed that the company is working on a battery for homes and businesses during an earnings call in February.

“We’re going to unveil the Tesla home battery, or the sort of consumer battery that will be for use in people’s houses or businesses, fairly soon,” he said, according to BGR. “We have the design done, and it should start going to production, probably in about six months or so. We’re trying to figure out a date to have the product unveiling, but it’s probably in the next month or two months. And it’s really great; I’m really excited about it.”

Crap! Now I won't be able to annoy my neighbors with my generator during power outages! They are seriously taking all the fun out of loud engines that I love to annoy my HOA gustapo with. :(
