So after all of two months with stripes I’ve decided to have em removed and go with a satin hood wrap.

General question of etiquette: Do you guys tip for this kind of work? If so what’s the going rate for a decent job well done?

I do not think a tip is required for automotive work. This is a set in stone job and price.

Quite honestly, service has gone down hill in the food industry, it kills me to even tip at a restaurant at this point. A shame how bad employees can really hurt good businesses.

Hmm I've been a Automotive technician for 33 years and have had several tips throughout my career. Been the owner of a shop now for ten years and we regularly get nice tips for great service. I always tip for good service no matter what that service might be. I do agree service in the restaurant business has went down.

I dont tip for services that people are getting paid in full for already. Restaurant waiting is different because tips for the most part is the bulk of their pay. I tip them well. Hey if I feel someone has really gone beyond the call of duty maybe, but not generally. Profit and pay are built into the price already. Where would it end? Cashier at Home Depot because they were super nice?

If wait staff starts getting $15/hr, I’m going to reassess my tipping policy.

It depends. Once a year I get Summit Gift Certificates for the Techs at my Shop. The best.
Valaya Motorsports in San Jose. My detailer who sometimes stores the SP gets a $20. Gives it a courtesy bath and is flexible with times and dates. Service people should be tipped for good work.

I’m with you guys. Can’t say I’ve received a tip in the medical field, but appreciative families will occasionally send in much pizza/donuts for my staff.

After the sub par stripe job I ended up with (which of course I realize 2 weeks after I had it done thanks to work) I was prompted for a tip at checkout.

I’ve heard of guys tipping for great work, but wasn’t really aware if tips were an industry standard/expectation.

I definitely tip my tire installer, because I make it known ahead what they are dealing with, & I bring wheels to them OFF the car! No scratches & extra balance time is well worth it.
I also tip my tint guy, only because he does it while I wait & has done all my vehicles & family vehicles for 20 years. He is greatly appreciated.

Tipping has gone full stupid for which I think some people do it more for their ego than anything. You often see it by the people that brag about tipping when the subject comes up.

As someone that worked their way through high-school and college working in restaurants I can appreciate the concept but I leave it for those not making a real wage. Now more than ever with this 15 dollar minimum BS I live by that even more. Speaking of which... anyone else notice that as wages go up and cost for services/products increase the level of service has tanked?

In Toronto a few years back and knew there was a high dollar minimum wage and the waitresses also made a lot more, so when the bill came for $20 lunch, I left a toonie ($2 coin) and one of the guys at the table called me a cheap bastard lol. In the US they get like $2 per hour but in Toronto was over $11 per hour so no way I'm tipping the same.

You mean you don't like how now everywhere you go it ask if you want to leave a tip.....even just at a fast food place?
And then they're watching you the whole time to see what you select/do!

I get tipping at a sit down restaurant (and I tip well), but now it seems EVERYONE wants a tip to do their job

If the owner does the job, who sets the price he wants, then I dont tip. If its an employee, then I tip about 10-15%. However, as another mentioned about quality, I often seem to have an issue with the work days later and wished I hadn't tipped the person.

I agree with many people on the post, tipping has gotten WAY out of control !
I tip well for great service at a restaurant, because those folks live on tips. A "good" auto tech at a busy shop will make between $75K and $100K a year. He/She needs no tip to do the job that is expected of them. If someone comes to my house to deliver furniture and they dont destroy the walls or floors, they might get a small tip.

Tipping crazy = Crumble Cookie, at check out where they HAND YOU the box of cookies. Asking if you want to give "custom tip" or 15% or 20% or 25% tip ???????????? WTF ?????????????
15-25% tip for being handed a box of cookies.....wow !
