I was rolling and punched it, engine cutout like i hit the breaks and seemed like it shut off, then continued to run slow and then back to normal. Is that the rev limiter? why so violent?

Once before i was using the paddles, the car was brand new and i was in first at the lights, i forgot to slap the shifter back to auto (i only use the paddles to downshift) and I turned left and the car started to studder,and shut off, but wasn't like today.

I ask because when you do a violent burnout it's easy to blow past the shift point and hit the rev limiter or fuel cut off .
