2022 Order Forcefully Cancelled

Hello Forum Members 👋🏽

This is my first time posting here as I need some advice. I ordered a 2022 Dodge Charger Hellcat Widebody in April of 2022. I live in Canada and the dealers told me that I would be waiting anywhere from 8-12 months. Fast forward this Saturday I got a call from my dealer that they will be bumping my car from a 2022 to a 2023 as they are done with the 2022 production year, which is fine by me. However, today I was told that dodge is canceling all 2022 orders and they would have to put a brand new order through, so I would basically start from square 1. Right now the manager is telling me he will try to get dodge to keep my position in line but I am going to have to pay 2023 prices which are 5 thousand more than what I was originally supposed to pay. Anyone on here knows if they are allowed to do this to a customer. My friends who have bought chevys and fords whose cars were bumped due to covid never experienced this.

Hmmmm…maybe it’s different in Canada but in most cases here, Dodge creates a special “incentive” code that keeps your price the same. (Effectively price protecting you).

Hi Dhillon,

First, welcome to the forum, sorry it's under these circumstances.
Your question is "are they allowed to do this to a customer".
Before we get to the somewhat muddy answer let me give you my purchasing story LOL.
A while back I ordered a 21 TRX fully loaded, had a $5,000 deposit, waited about 4 or 5 months for it to be built but then when it got to the dealership several of the options were missing.
It was a software glitch Ram was dealing with and the dealership recognized it and gave me a couple of options, #1. reducing the money that I owed for the truck, #2. ordering a new truck or #3. just giving me my deposit back, I chose to get my deposit back.
Not to bad right, I already sold my Denali and had figured out in that four or five months I really didn't need a pickup truck so I ordered a super stock. Same dealership, $5,000 down waited 4 or 5 months and like you they were changing the years but my order was just outright canceled, the dealer gave a few options but I chose to take my money and walk away. Sometimes the world just isn't fair. Nothing illegal was done to me and nothing illegal was done to you, so yeah they're allowed to do that. It certainly doesn't make it right I wouldn't exactly call it good business practices but it happens all the time.
Sometimes it even works out for the best as in my case.
I came across the car that I absolutely fell in love with, my 21 Challenger red eye, it was already built sitting on the floor just waiting for me.
So who knows maybe this deal didn't work out, maybe you'll come across a deal that's even better.

I will bring this up to my dealership rep, once they get back to me!

The problem is that in Canada it takes so long to actually get an order through while I have seen guys on youtube order a Widebody hellcat in the states and get it in 3-6 months. On top of that, my car did have a small markup from the dealer but I accepted as looking for a slightly used car online in my area is 15-20k more than what I was supposed to pay for the one I ordered.
Buy one that is already built. That’s what I did, I didn’t have time to wait for one so I found one with the exact options I wanted and made it happen. Good luck!

First, I'm a little surprised that the dealer had waited this long to inform you on the status of your order. The MY22 production ended about a month ago. In terms of the pricing, I'm not certain if Canada is different or not... but I have seen/heard many cases here where guys kept the '22 pricing for their '23 order.

FWIW - I ordered my car back in June of last year and it still isn't in my garage. There are 2023 models sitting on the dealer lots that I could walk in and buy... yet mine is nowhere to be seen lol. Again, the MY23 production didn't even start until last month..yet those cars are here. The whole thing is a circus and unfortunately the customer often gets the short end of the stick.

I've shared this a few times before- my 21' order was cancelled in Jan, 22' by Dodge and the car was reordered, by Dodge as a 22'. The price increased a few $k but my dealer never changed the agreed priced. The car arrived 5 months later.

Hate to call out the dealer  but it sounds like they are using the new order as a way to make some extra money at your expense. Literally.

Here is how it works in Canada (I always factory order all my stuff). If the dealer has an allocation, you will be able to place the order. You select your options and get a price at the bottom of the sheet. That price is a estimate and shipping is on top of that cost. Depending when the order gets picked up, FCA will build it and send the invoice to the dealer. Now if the price goes up, the dealer has no choice but to pay the additional cost to get this vehicle to the dealership. Now it's up to the customer if they want to complete the transaction or walk away. This happened on my 2021 3500 HD Limited Diesel order and 2021 Trackhawk order. When the truck arrived, the price had gone up $5000.00. I walked away from it. When the Trackhawk arrived, the price went up $2500 of which the dealer and myself split the cost and we finalized the deal.

I hate that use of force. You poor bastards in the great White North! They are assembled in Brampton, but no leg up for Canadiens. WTH.

To be fair, they do that a lot down here too. Loads of people get canceled every year. My order was placed on 12-3-2021. It got picked up on the last day of '22 production on 12-13-2022 and pushed to a '23 VIN. It's being built now. If I take delivery in March, it'll be a 15 month wait.

Are you sure that in Canada being able to place an order means they have an allocation. I’ve heard of plenty of Canadians placing orders and their order stays in BX. Which at least in the states the BX state only means basically the order is valid, but doesn’t mean anything regarding allocation, availability of parts, ect.

The rest of what you describe is the same at the states. You arrange the price before hand with the dealer. If the price changes and the dealer isn’t willing to eat the difference, you can walk away (really you can walk away for any reason at most you lose the deposit - and in some states you may not even lose that).

Any reputable dealer should be up front about their allocations. Sure, anyone of them car take your order but you'll be stuck in BX hell for years if that dealer doesn't have any allocations.

If an honorable man wants to keep his word....then he keeps it. They don't have to mark it up A DIME and knowing that they inconvenienced you as they have, it should be LESS than what you originally agreed to pay. It's tricky but I'd be looking elsehwere as I am a principled person. Dealerships can do ANYTHING they want and they're doing that to you because they want to in terms of charging you more. I'd start looking elsehwre and I'd pay the higher rate and give someone else my money before them on GP. Best of luck though.

Thank you to everyone who gave me feedback on my post. I came to the conclusion that there is no point arguing with Dodge and I canceled my order and got my refund. I was able to find a Hellcat Widebody parked in a dealer across the country and I just bought it lol. Got a nice deal compared to buying from my city where everything is marked up 10-15k. I will have to pay a couple thousand for shipping but I got it in the color I wanted and it seems like who built this car wanted one of everything lol. I posted the option list below.
Once again, thank you to everyone who participated!
