Just picked up a 2017 M6 Hellcat with 25k miles. Pretty cold here so traction isn’t the best but should I be spinning the tires at 60 mph in 4th-6th gears? Can’t tell if the clutch is slipping or if I’m actually breaking the tires loose. No other issues with shifting.

Even on summer tires below 40F when the rubber is rock hard, spinning at 60mph in 6th gear is hard to believe you wouldn’t feel the car sliding as fast as the wheel speed would build compared to actual speed.

Why are you punching it in 6th gear at 60mph? Just curious

The clutch on these M6 cats are not a good match at all for the amount of torque this engine puts out even when stock especially with the addition of clutch delay valve. If you smell clutch during a spirited drive your clutch is most likely starting to slip.

I went through 4th-6th at varying speeds (45 mph - 70 mph) to see if the effect was similar. Unfortunately, the “spinning” seemed to happen through all 3 gears.

Just pick one gear, like 5th at 60 mph and foot off the clutch go WOT and if you get any slip or see the tach rpm jump then you need a clutch.

I haven't worn out a clutch in decades but back in the day when a clutch slipped, it wasn't just a little bit. As soon as slipping started the engine would rev, start putting out more torque and slip a lot more. Pretty unmistakable. Not sure about these new fangled things!

That's the big problem with used manuals, everybody thinks they know how to drive one, but a lot of them have no clue. Pretty much every time I sold a car, it was painful to watch the buyer during the test drive.

It is hard to tell sometimes. Best way for me to tell, if it isn’t squirreling back and forth, is to get on a clean area of road and try it. If its spinning at all you should see some sign of faint black mark in your mirror. What a day we live in, where cars are so powerful we can’t get traction in fourth gear!

Starting in 3rd with the torque these make and going WOT is a good way to smoke a pretty good clutch

When the 5th gen ZL1 came out and we modded a few to 700whp right away it was pretty easy for those guys to waste the stock clutch with one bad launch on a prepped track and tires. So be careful with how you “test” it in case your clutch is still decent as of now

Agree, I wouldn't do that.

Do the highway test from 60, if it slips then you need a clutch anyway so no harm no foul.
