What intrigues me about the Charger is the performance equation. Here you’ve got a four-door performance/family car with four available engines. The part of me not wanting to be stuck in a Chevrolet Cruze the rest of my life decided to assemble some data to try to find the “sweet spot” for how much performance I can get at a given dollar level.
We know that more money gets you more horsepower. And we know that more horsepower gets you faster acceleration. Therefore more money gets you faster acceleration. But how *much* more? Does 10% more money get you 10% faster acceleration? How about horsepower? Does 20% more horsepower get you 20% faster acceleration? I needed to know. So attached is the data I assembled.
Observation: No question the Hellcat is a performance bargain. But the data shows that as you move “up the chain” from the Charger V-6, the performance increases become diminished. You pay a lot more money for the HP/performance increases going to the Hellcat than you do for going to the R/T or R/T Scat Pack.
Now if you’re not price sensitive, this diminished return is not relevant. Go for the Hellcat by all means. And this comparison leaves out a LOT of variables such as bragging rights, resale value, etc. But for those who are price sensitive and have other things to spend money on, it seems the R/T Charger makes a really good value proposition.
