What intrigues me about the Charger is the performance equation. Here you’ve got a four-door performance/family car with four available engines. The part of me not wanting to be stuck in a Chevrolet Cruze the rest of my life decided to assemble some data to try to find the “sweet spot” for how much performance I can get at a given dollar level.

We know that more money gets you more horsepower. And we know that more horsepower gets you faster acceleration. Therefore more money gets you faster acceleration. But how *much* more? Does 10% more money get you 10% faster acceleration? How about horsepower? Does 20% more horsepower get you 20% faster acceleration? I needed to know. So attached is the data I assembled.

Observation: No question the Hellcat is a performance bargain. But the data shows that as you move “up the chain” from the Charger V-6, the performance increases become diminished. You pay a lot more money for the HP/performance increases going to the Hellcat than you do for going to the R/T or R/T Scat Pack.

Now if you’re not price sensitive, this diminished return is not relevant. Go for the Hellcat by all means. And this comparison leaves out a LOT of variables such as bragging rights, resale value, etc. But for those who are price sensitive and have other things to spend money on, it seems the R/T Charger makes a really good value proposition.

Another thing to consider is the Hellcat isn't able to take advantage of the extra HP/acceleration until 50-60 mph and above as it has a hard time putting down the additional power until speed increases.

my HC can take advantage of speed from 1mph on

0-60 in 3.6 seconds with nitto's......a time i will most likely lower the next time i try

cant do that with a RT...maybe 5 seconds 0-60

get nitto 555s and you can put the power down at will at any speed..

5-10 years from now a RT will hold much less of its original value as a % of what you paid vs a HC

while a HC is and may never be an investment car....it will hold its value better than a RT that you see 20+ of a day

not that a RT is a bad car.....still bad ass, good bang for the buck....especially the 392 version

That's a good point actually. I was only looking at 0-60 times. The extra power of the hellcat is of minimal use without traction. If I had used quarter mile time I suspect the hellcat would have been more "efficient" meaning the greater horsepower had a bigger effect on acceleration.

0-60 means nothing with stock tires....$600 for 2 tires and youve improved your 0-60 traction immensely

use the nitto tire 0-60 in your equation and see how it rates to a RT vs Price paid

at gas station i met a guy who builds the hellcat in Brampton...he said they filled the charger body with a special foam that helps the aerodynamics significantly...cool eh?

That is EXACTLY my point, with stock tires, the Hellcat is just beginning to show its additional power/acceleration at 50-60 mph.

That's the same foam that traps moisture and causes the bodies to rot... Late model Challengers aren't doing to well in the rust department. It surprised me when I saw some of the pictures online. Body rot and rust has pretty much become a thing of the past (except for extreme cases where vehicles are used in really nasty environments -- plow trucks etc. etc.)
