Just a dumb question.............

Yes I understand that our cars are "heavy" but the v6 challenger has AWD so the "parts" are there albeit need to be considerable stronger. The TH has the Hellcat engine and all wheel drive so Im wondering why hasn't an AWD hellcat challenger or charger been developed yet.

Because the Hellcat engine is too big and takes up too much space to fit the AWD components in the LX platform.

I always thought it was odd they made both a trackhawk and a hellcat durango, not to mention the idea of introducing awd to the LX hellcat.
I assumed they did it to keep the original "jeep" srt guys loyal. No idea.... i guess the durango is larger, 3rd row????
Especially since they did away with the grand caravan to only sell pacificas, no need for the different brands to fight over sales for the same product.

Because if you want a 5,500lb vehicle you might as well get the space of an SUV.
No. The listed difference in weight between RWD and AWD Challenger SXT is less than 200 Lb, so adding AWD would add some weight, but not that much.

You would get low 3s 0-60 for a HC on crappy stock tires, so I'm pretty sure there would be buyers for a 4650 Lb AWD Hellcat.

Why don't folks read the entire thread?? SMH.... Because the PACKAGING doesn't fit with a giant Bown Hemi Head 8 cylinder engine that would require heavy duty axles and transfer case. The small V6 works because there is enough room in the LX platform to pull it off. That's why!

As far as as I know Trackhawk uses the standard transfer case. Heavy duty axles (if needed) would be a fraction of an inch thicker. As for packaging everything with the HC engine, that might be a problem though. Which doesn't necessarily is the reason "Why?"...

The transfer case is not standard in the Trackhawk.

the Quadra Trac transfer case had to be shortened by 30 millimeters. But despite its smaller size, the T-case has actually gotten stronger,
with its innards now including a pair of forged sprockets wrapped with a wider chain.
That single-speed transfer case—with a front clutch that has a 1,400 lb-ft capacity—sends power through a stronger driveshaft with a 3/4-millimeter higher wall thickness than the standard SRT’s.

Try putting the AWD system of the current Challenger into a Hellcat Challenger and tell me how that goes for you. After you get done sweeping up the street with a broom in front of your house you'll realize It needs tons of beefed up components to handle that kind of power.

Thank you for your thoughtful suggestion. I was trying to say that going AWD would result in ~200 Lb or so weight increase, beefed up or not. If you think it would be more like 1000 Lb ("5500lb vehicle"), well, it's up to you.

It wouldn't be 1000lbs for sure but it also wouldn't be 200lbs. Audi bragged years ago that their AWD system was the lightest in the world and it was 200lbs and was rated for 350hp

Maybe that was for the whole drivetrain, or maybe it was compared to their FWD setup. 4WD adds ~300 Lb to the weight of RAM 2500, and that's with low range and the HD truck beefiness. I can't imagine AWD adding more than, say, 250 Lb to a HC car. And that's just the weight of a well-fed American lol.

The AWD System for the Durango and Track Hawk is not the same as the LX. You can still order the Police Package in the Charger with AWD and the 5.7 Hemi. Stronger than the 3.6 AWD System but NOT strong enough for the Hellcat. Plus, the Police Package still uses the OLD NAG1 5 speed trans and NOT a ZF 8 speed unit. I guess you could pay someone to build you a stronger 5 speed that would handle the torque but you would still need a front diff assy that could handle it. Maybe this is also why a Track Hawk will break traction at the rear BEFORE the power goes to the front. Another creative way of saving the stress on the front axle assy.

The Charger Police Pursuit has changed, the last year for the 5.7L/AWD combination was 2020.

Now for 2021-up, the old 5-speed automatic has been dropped and all Pursuits will now use the A8.

The problem is, there's only two possible driver train configurations available now:

3.6L with AWD or 5.7L with RWD

That's it, the same as the civilian cars so definitely disappointing there is still no option to get a V8/A8/AWD.

You are indeed correct! I was looking hard in 2020 and 19 and did not see that one go past for the 21 MY. They will loose Fleet Business for sure but, I assume that was part of the calculation. Maybe Daimler told FCA no more NAG 1 AWD transmissions. Thanks for the sad news. Time to start looking for a leftover 2020 somewhere.
