So, I’ve never owned a truck before, and I've been a truck guy. In fact, quite the opposite. I mostly like Japanese sports cars (have an ‘05 STI) because that’s what I grew up with. I recently started exploring BMWs as good “do it all” vehicles and used to have a 2014 335i and now have a 2020 M340i. In between those, I factory ordered a 2020 Charger Scat Pack that I really loved but we moved to NJ and it wasn’t going to work year round with the snow (hence the M340i).

However, the idea of a "muscle" truck has already been something that appealed to me - ever since I read about the GMC Syclone's running mid-13's stock - and have been watching the progress ever since. The first gen Ford Raptor seemed awesome when it debuted, and I actually rented one for a day a few years back just to see what it'd be like. I was a little underwhelmed with the performance - thought it would be faster - but it was roomy, comfy and overall I kind of liked it. While I didn't think it was something I wanted as my primary vehicle, it did cement the idea that I wanted a V8, hence the Charger.

My only other experience with a "truck" is my wife's 2016 4Runner. She loves it, but whenever I drive it just feels so wallowy and slow. Solid though - just not my cup of tea.

With Dodge announcing that the current Challengers, Chargers, etc are going away, I feel like I need to get "something" now before they’re gone. I was debating between a Scat Pack Widebody Challenger and a narrow body Hellcat Challenger, but am now also considering the TRX.

Maybe a stupid question, but has anyone ever cross shopped these cars? I don’t actually need a truck for truck things - this would be my third car and really be more of a toy that I’d drive occasionally for fun. However, while a Challenger wouldn’t offer any more practicality over the cars we have now, the TRX possibly could. I mean, there are times when it’d nice to have a pickup truck to throw stuff in and haul around. It’d also be larger and more roomy than our other cars (the 4Runner has 7 seats, but with 5 passengers it isn't as roomy, and it doesn't have nearly the cargo capacity). So, in some sense it offers up something our others cars don’t. But the main reason I want it is that in a few years time, when all the V8s are discontinued, I want to be able to look in my garage and be glad I got one of the last good ones.

The Challenger (either scat pack or Hellcat) probably wouldn’t be more engaging to drive than my STI, or more good at "get in and go" things than the BMW. Hell, under most circumstances on the street, I doubt either the Scat Pack or the Hellcat would be faster than the BMW either. The only thing it offers is badassery, nostalgia, and sound. Those things are important to me, but it’s hard to quantify.

The TRX would offer those same things plus the additional utility.

Am I crazy for considering a TRX if I don’t actually need a truck? If you had to choose 1 vehicle as an "end of an era" type vehicle - would the TRX be it?

Not my first truck, but it is awesome. I'm running low 11's with only intake and lower pulley. I have upper pulley, injectors, PCM unlock and several other things in transit as we speak and expecting low 10's around mid 130's give or take in the qtr. It's a blast off road. Hey that sounds awesome - I’ll definitely check out your videos on FB. Out of curiosity how are you running 130+ trap speeds when the car is speed limited to 118 due to the stock tire speed ratings? Are you just removing the speed limiter via the tune or are you also running different tires with a higher speed rating?
Also, are you running 93 or also some E85?

As a third vehicle it would be cool. Otherwise 8mpg would get old fast.
Yea this would be my third car, and our family’s fourth. So, mpg isn’t really a concern since we’d only take it out when we need/want to.

Does anyone have experience going from a Charger or Challenger Hellcat to the TRX?

I imagine the size difference is noticeable. However, my 392 Charger still always felt like a big car and even if it was technically capable of taking corners at speed it never inspired any confidence to do so. So, it was more or less a comfy car that was good in a straight line.

From what I gather, the TRX is basically just that - except with better everyday traction due to the 4WD and added truck functionality - does that sound about right?

I'm actually shutting down @ 117 before I hit the end of the quarter now at 11.1 based on the dash info center. You may have overlooked it in my previous comment. I'm expecting to be in the 130's with the PCM unlock and tune. I'm basing this off of other mods that others have installed. I will have an E85 option that I can swap the tune for on my phone at the pump while I'm filling up.

This is a new set up and I'm not 100% sure of the details as I have not used it yet. It should be here first of the week and I have plans of installing everything over the weekend next weekend. I will post the results after I have a few days of feeling it out and seeing how it does with 93 vs E85 and keep you posted.

I went through Ripatune for several reasons.

1) Steve Ripa has always been quick to answer any questions and help me put together a set up that would work best for what I was trying to achieve. This tells me that he/Ripatune will be on top of things for any service or adjustments that may be needed after the install.

2). Price was over $1k less through Ripatune. Others I priced my set up with were all over the place and pushing me to keep adding things that I wasn't ready for at this time. Pushing it out of my budget at this time.

3). I have purchased from them before and the transaction and details were quick and easy.

You can check them out on their website as well as FB messenger and he will respond pretty quickly and get you what info you are looking for. They have a good reputation from all that I have seen.

Sorry for the long rant

This is how I feel about Wranglers. I wouldn't want to daily it, and it isn't a weekend/track toy, but as a 3rd vehicle it would be fun. A 392 Wrangler in 17+ inches of snow would be a blast. The other 363 days a year, meh.

If you feel that the 4Runner is "wallowy", maybe you should test drive a TRX before deciding.

my primary vehicle is my ram (sure not a trx) ive owned a truck for a main vehicle since 1977 when i bought my first new truck. I have a wrangler thats our second vehicle. I drive it most. its a 2 door and the wife gets nervous driving it on slippery roads in the winter. Doesnt bother me much though. Would i want one for a primary vehicle. Yes and no. Not a two door. Maybe a 4 door but then that takes away its usefullness in the woods around here. Id never get into my hunting spots with a 4 door. The challenger is just a toy. Iike a motor cycle. Wife occasionaly takes it to work but mostly its a weekend toy. Would i want it as a daily driver? Maybe but sure not in the winter and sure not like mine with a stick. A trx isnt a daily driver in my opinion. Id love to have one but gas mileage would kill you and its just to big to go even where i take my ram. So if i had one it too would have to be a 3rd vehicle. But if i wanted a fast truck i sure dont need three 4x4s so something like ram r/t with a built motor or supercharger would make more sense to me. Big thing is id hate to pay 90k for a truck and drive it in the winter salt up here or with the idiots from the south that try to pretend they can drive in the snow and by south i mean 200 miles south of me not just the deep south. I always tell people that if nascar had one race on ice up my 87 year old ma could whip there asses. So i guess bottom line there proabably will never be a trx in my driveway unless i win the lotto

Meanwhile, I think the TRX is a great daily driver, in any weather. It was bought specifically for that. With its longer wheelbase and better ground clearance it is also far better suited for winter use than the Trackhawk it replaced.

But, I would hate to pay $90K for one when a somewhat well optioned version could be bought for a bit under $80K.

Mileage? Not exactly great, but better than expected. I've seen the Lie-O-Meter in my girlfriend's car show mid 15s, and even I can stay in the 14 mpg range with ease, if not going much over 80 mph. That's hand calculated, by the way.
