So, I’ve never owned a truck before, and I've been a truck guy. In fact, quite the opposite. I mostly like Japanese sports cars (have an ‘05 STI) because that’s what I grew up with. I recently started exploring BMWs as good “do it all” vehicles and used to have a 2014 335i and now have a 2020 M340i. In between those, I factory ordered a 2020 Charger Scat Pack that I really loved but we moved to NJ and it wasn’t going to work year round with the snow (hence the M340i).
However, the idea of a "muscle" truck has already been something that appealed to me - ever since I read about the GMC Syclone's running mid-13's stock - and have been watching the progress ever since. The first gen Ford Raptor seemed awesome when it debuted, and I actually rented one for a day a few years back just to see what it'd be like. I was a little underwhelmed with the performance - thought it would be faster - but it was roomy, comfy and overall I kind of liked it. While I didn't think it was something I wanted as my primary vehicle, it did cement the idea that I wanted a V8, hence the Charger.
My only other experience with a "truck" is my wife's 2016 4Runner. She loves it, but whenever I drive it just feels so wallowy and slow. Solid though - just not my cup of tea.
With Dodge announcing that the current Challengers, Chargers, etc are going away, I feel like I need to get "something" now before they’re gone. I was debating between a Scat Pack Widebody Challenger and a narrow body Hellcat Challenger, but am now also considering the TRX.
Maybe a stupid question, but has anyone ever cross shopped these cars? I don’t actually need a truck for truck things - this would be my third car and really be more of a toy that I’d drive occasionally for fun. However, while a Challenger wouldn’t offer any more practicality over the cars we have now, the TRX possibly could. I mean, there are times when it’d nice to have a pickup truck to throw stuff in and haul around. It’d also be larger and more roomy than our other cars (the 4Runner has 7 seats, but with 5 passengers it isn't as roomy, and it doesn't have nearly the cargo capacity). So, in some sense it offers up something our others cars don’t. But the main reason I want it is that in a few years time, when all the V8s are discontinued, I want to be able to look in my garage and be glad I got one of the last good ones.
The Challenger (either scat pack or Hellcat) probably wouldn’t be more engaging to drive than my STI, or more good at "get in and go" things than the BMW. Hell, under most circumstances on the street, I doubt either the Scat Pack or the Hellcat would be faster than the BMW either. The only thing it offers is badassery, nostalgia, and sound. Those things are important to me, but it’s hard to quantify.
The TRX would offer those same things plus the additional utility.
Am I crazy for considering a TRX if I don’t actually need a truck? If you had to choose 1 vehicle as an "end of an era" type vehicle - would the TRX be it?
