Black Key after Pulley Swap/Tune

4055 Views 17 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Doublewide
Taking my Cat to HHP in December for a Stage 1 package (Litens 2.85, injectors, tune). Thinking ahead in the rare case that my wife wants to drive the car, will the black key cause issues based on any real life experience?

what I know and have read it should not have any problem with the black key. all the black key does is limit the amount of boost I believe 2 around 6 pounds no matter what pully you have.
IDK about the black key once Tuned.
Mine has never been used.

My husband always taught me about his cars our cars and my cars. We had a lot of Fun together!

Just take the time to teach your wife how the Hellcat works on the street.
She can handle the power but it doesnt necessarily mean she will be driving with it " all"
Her safety net is just don't go WOT or hard launch it's that easy.

When you see [email protected] bring your wife along. He is very good at helping with how Hellcats run!

Linda :)
My car is tuned and the black key works fine. The only thing is the Black key has an increase in boost as well so if you think that you're only going to get 500hp on the black key, it will be more.

Just ran mine in black key mode last week (actual key was home) HHP Tune, 825 wheel M6, tried the black key mode (switchable in setup even while driving as long as your foot is off the gas) to see if first and second could be tamed for launch, it does but unfortunately there’s no quick switch out of it while you on it and 3 rd and 4 th where lame, still ran a 115 12.5 1/4 though, just no wheel spin at all. Hmmmm, maybe good for bracket racing Camaro’s , Vetts, etc lol.

What mods to get to 825?

Blower spacers, port matching and blending of blower inlet now Making almost 17 lbs of peak boost.
Mainly 2.85 Litens and 1050’s on 93 with a HHP tune

Nice. My car is going in mid December for Josh to work his magic.

Cool!! You’ll love the additional kick for sure! How many miles on your plugs? I suggest put a fresh set of NGK 2309’s gapped at .028” to start new life off with, I’ve had good luck with them.
Ran across this post doing a search because I was curious myself. My car makes just over 1K hp with the red key, its pretty much unusable on the street so I figured I would drive the car with the black key to see what happens. First of all, I don't like that I can't access the sport or track trans modes. Second, I expected it not to be 500hp with my mods, but I'd bet its making somewhere around 800 hp for sure. I saw the boost gauge hit 13psi with the black key. I could technically drive it like that, but would really prefer the trans be in sport or track for the increase shift pressure. I suppose I could have my tuner retune the trans for the black key but I would still only get one mode so whatever I choose to tune it to, that's what I'm stuck with. I think the easier way for me is going to be use the red key and just set the car to 500hp mode.

On my 2.85 pulley M6 car, with the black key I see 7 psi. Luckily I don’t need a trans tune but rather driver mod. Lol

Interesting you were only seeing 7psi, I have a 2.85 pulley too.
here is a test with the black key in a modified hellcat

Mine doesn't do this with the black key.

Its because my elevation is way higher. Plus you have a ported blower which is good for almost 2psi of boost. Your blower spacers are worth 1.5psi of boost as well. I don't have either of those things.

Wasn't aware you are at higher elevation. Gotcha.
Mine doesn't like the black key. Tried it once for shits n giggles and it went into limp mode after a short WOT burst. Not sure what caused that but honestly don't care as it drives perfect with the red key
