Well if your dumb enough to use a rim with that spindly of a spoke and in a cast replica to boot don’t complain about the off the track outcome. Race stars for straight line 1/4 mile stuff is one thing but to road course that same wheel one would have to have a bag of rocks for a brain.
It is a true story. He confirmed it on FB but they didn't contact him at all before writing the article. The wheel is made by Vertini and is flow formed which is stronger than cast but not as strong as true forged. That being said, he beats the piss out of that car on the road course. For his use, in a 4500lb car, he should probably use a forged wheel or a better design with more strength around the spokes.
Onur Can's Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat broke a wheel while road racing, but not because he intentionally bought a low end wheel.

Patrick Rall posted a legit article with the owner...
"This wasn’t an issue of someone buying cheap wheels. This was an issue of someone being told that they were buying forged wheels that would withstand the abuse of road racing in a Hellcat Charger, which clearly isn’t the case. In fact, Can spoke with the wheel manufacturer and the company immediately said that they would not recommend the wheel in question for road racing in a Hellcat Charger."
