A cashiers check from the bank itself (as the payer) would be safe. A cashiers check from a private party can be cancelled by the private party prior to being deposited into an account. I have sold a lot of cars and will only accept a cashiers check if the buyer is patient enough to wait for me to send them the title once the check clears. They get the car and a bill of sale while we wait for the check to clear. Wire transfer is the safest option.
Cashiers check is issued by the bank not the private party. The teller immediatly deducts the funds from the payor account and then the bank writes you a check. It’s from the bank to you. Guys name isn’t even on it. I’m sure if the payor can prove fraud the bank can go after you mater for it back but it’s not like a regular stop payment.

A cashiers check is Jiat as good as cash. It’s pretty much the same thing if you KNOW the check is good.

Have you ever cancelled a cashiers check? I have when the car I went to look at was not what I thought it would be. I was not required to re-deposit the funds. Also, if it is as good as cash why does it take 2-3 days for the funds appear in your account after depositing the check?

From google real quick.

Generally, a customer cannot order a stop payment on a cashier's check, and the bank must honor a cashier's check when it is presented for payment. This is because a cashier's check is drawn directly on the bank that issues the check, not on your account.

It also has to clear like a normal check but it’s from the bank. The bank is not going to bounce a check lol.

I looked real quick as well says something about 90 days it has to not be cashed. If I got a cashiers check and cashed it within the time period it’s my money.

I’d rather have:
1)wire
2)cashiers check

I wild say those are safer than a pile of cash as welll.

Also from Google:

As to whether a cashier's check can be canceled, the answer is yes, but it may take some work. So, it's good to be as careful as possible when handling checks of any sort. If you simply change your mind and don't need the cashier's check anymore, your bank can explain how to get that money back in your account.

The point here is why take the risk? I have bought and sold over a hundred cars and it simply isn’t worth the risk to me. If you come with a cashiers check, you will get the title when the check clears. If you show up with cash, you get the title right there and I deposit the cash and can use it immediately if I care to. Same with a wire transfer.

I had a minor issue with that this year actually. Check was made out to the buyer AND me for some reason, so we both had to be present when I deposited it. Luckily she was legit and honorable so we got it sorted out.

Ten stacks vs going with dude to the credit union and watching cashier make the check?

There’s a better chance some of the bills are counterfeit than there is that the check ends up no good

You guys will argue about just about anything tho

Carry on : )

If I accept a large amount of CASH. I make the buyer go with me to the bank and I deposit it. Once it goes through the machine that counts it (and verifies it is legit) the deposit is complete and final. Then I hand them the title.

Wrong. Cashiers checks are issued and guaranteed by the issuing bank. The check writer is out of the picture the moment the bank charges their account and issues the check. I guess one can make a fake check, but not stop a real one.
Wrong. There is a known history of cashier's checks being canceled days or weeks after a transaction. They used to be secure.
Now they are not.
