I'd like to start a serious fact based thread on why we outsource chip production. Please keep politics out as much as possible but I suspect it will Vera that direction inevitably.

Here is a clip of a report done by 60 minutes on it. I’ll try to find the entire report. Zero to do with politics and I hope people dont twist it into that.

There won't be any politics in here.
There's another forum for people with a certain political slant. I don't bother looking there much anymore.
Although I can't see that video in my Country.
LOL

Average of 100 chips per vehicle nowadays. So, with that being said, the auto plant where I work makes an average of 2100 vehicles a day with 2 shifts & 3 lines. That's 210,000 chips, in one factory, each day. Granted supplier parts come in ready for installation. That's just a very rough estimate of what's going out the door daily.
It's crazy!!!

Why do we outsource it? It sure isn't because they got them more responsively and cheaper locally.

Taiwan, world center of chip production, has just been doing such a bang-up job of microchips for decades that we learned to rely heavily on them.

Chips are the main reason the USA would ever defend Taiwan.
