So.. I probably know the answer but... My JB should be here soon... is the dealer extended warranty worth it?
To clarify: there is no such thing as an extended warranty. It's a misnomer that is misleading and borderline fraudulent. What they call an "extended warranty" is legally a service contract. It doesn't have the protections of the MMWA--which only covers the original factory warranty.

That pedantry aside, it depends. In most cases for most cars probably not.
However, for our high powered HCs there are some very expensive repairs that have a fairly high probability of being required at some point depending on how you use it.

Early MY HCs will nearly all have their SC fail--they used under-rated bearings. I don't know if that's been an issue on the RE blowers.
Many M6 HCs will have their transmission give out sooner or later. If you don't do power mods your A8 is probably plenty stout and won't be an issue.
A small number of HCs have spun their crankshaft or otherwise blown their motors even doing non-warranty-voiding activities---this is a risk on all of them.

If you intend to do any mods that will affect your emissions (and many power mods do), or track/race your car at all, then no--because those will void the entire service contract. (as will driving for uber/lyft with it, of all things)

Unless you have a Demon, in which case the drag strip is a warranty-covered activity. I'm not sure if JBs also enjoy that exception.

If you do decide to buy one the sooner you do often the less it will cost you.
I bought one right after my factory warranty expired. It's already paid for itself because my transmission just went out (again). I'm still waiting for my SC to fail--then it will have paid for itself considerably more.

There are several threads discussing "extended warranties" and some excellent recommendations on from whom to buy one to get the best pricing.

If you keep your car forever it is worth it.

If you get one make sure it is the Stellantis/Mopar/Dodge one. A lot of dealers offer their own version that is not from the manufacturer and is only good as long as the fly-by-night backer of the warranty is still in business.

Though Dodge no longer offers it, they used to have a lifetime warranty service contract. We bought it for our 2014 Charger when it got to 35,990 miles. It was only a few hundred more $ than the 100,000 mile warranty and covers the thing for as long as me and the wife are alive! (hopefully they dont hire hitmen to bump us off to get out of it). Anyway, it covers it for unlimited mileage til 2096 or some crazy year like that. It is not transferable but it is refundable if we ever sell the car. The only out for Dodge is if we get to a point that the repair would be more than the value of the car, they will decline the repair and then give us a check for the value of the car, and we keep the car. With these cars, (it's only a V6 AWD) I am more worried about the display panels and electronics than the actual drivetrain.

And of course, the only thing that has gone wrong so far in 105,000 miles have been the front driveshaft boots and seals. They replaced both front axles as a result with a $100 deductible. It's been a really dependable vehicle. Compare that to the extended warranty I got from GM for our 2009 Impala SS (Front wheel drive LS engine version). I probably got $8,000 worth of dealer repairs from that $1,800 warranty we bought. It was a 5-year old, out of warranty, used car we found it with only 4,000 miles on it. The elderly driver never used it and we bought it from the estate.

BTW, I think they dumped the unlimited plan because of us old guys who keep cars forever and really milk a warranty out to the bitter end.

I bought the service agreement due to the electronics.

would hate to the costs associated with a delam on the stereo face and an electronically controlled shock going bad a year after the regular warranty expires.

hard part for me is actually getting a copy of the coverage emailed to me…

Do it. 2016 charger purchased with 11k miles now at 60k miles. Mopar Max care has covered at least 10k in repairs. Well worth it. If you keep the car stock you can drive it as hard and often as you want without worry.

I plan to keep my SS forever, and purchased the 84 month, 100,000 mile warranty from my dealer simple because one repair and it would be covered. Plus if something does happen and I do need to sell the car it is transferable.

If you buy it with a new car, you have concurrent coverage so two warranties for 3/36 and 5/60. You might want to wait until the factory warranty is done and save some money. You can get any number of time/mileage warranties from many places, even after the factory ones have expired.

That's the way to do it.

My red C8 dropped its transmission at 2,800 miles. New trans, did break in period for 500 miles... at 5,200 the trans died again. No racing or anything, just normal street driving. Their fix was to put in a transaxle from the '23 MY which has a fix for the filter and solenoids getting gummed up which prevents adequate fluid flow (which in turn overheats and damages the transmission). I wasn't messing around anymore so I went ahead and bought an extended warranty for it, considering I'd killed 2 transmissions in less time than it takes for a single oil change. I've since sold it, but the great thing about their warranty is that they are going to apply it to the 3LT when it arrives, since I never had the opportunity to use it.

That warranty plus the B2B factory warranty will give me just about 10 years of powertrain coverage.

Edit: The reason I bought the warranty was due to the savings available so early on in the car's term. I anticipated that if this thing was going to chew up $12,000 transaxles with some frequency that a $2,900 extended warranty was almost certainly going to pay for itself.

EXTENDED is a funny word, often misinterpreted. you already have a 5/60,000. Why purchase ADDITIONAL at point of sale? You’re already covered. The “extended” happens AFTER the 5/60,000 expiration. You can buy supplements that aren’t included ie: bumper to bumper at any time. If you do not go the extended route, you will be contacted numerous times over the course of a couple years letting you know you can STILL purchase an extended warranty. You can tailor it to your style and habits, let’s say 10,000 miles but 10 years of coverage etc. you can also negotiate the price at time of purchase or down the road, you can also cancel any extended coverage at anytime and get your pro rated money back. Tons of people have traded in cars and they unknowingly never thought to get their residual warranty money refunded.
