Hey everyone, new hellcat owner here. Got a ‘16 with 7k miles on it. The steering wheel shakes when braking around 80 miles an hour so I assumed I needed new rotors. My local dodge dealer in Orlando quoted me $3136 to replace just the front brakes and rotors- from reading around that seems outrageous.. What is a reasonable price to pay for this? And what would generally be the cause for the shaking wheel when braking?

Go re-bed the brakes in. Google how to do it. Don’t come to a complete stop at all when you have them heated up. The first owner would have to be real hard on those brakes to warp them in 7k miles but it’s possible.

Search here for aftermarket rotor options for much cheaper and take them with and just have them installed wherever you are willing to pay for labor

Wow... you're getting into a percentage of the car's value just for brakes!

Total rip-off.

Brakes are going to be a little more expensive due to the parts, but not like that.
The labor rate shouldn't be more than any other car.

I would look at going with aftermarket "Power Stop" brakes.

Either install them yourself, or find a local shop who will work with you.

Yeah, agreed on both of the previous responses to your post OP. Thats a total rip. I would do my own work on that sort of job. But like stated above, buy your own brakes and rotors. Then find an honest mechanic with good reviews and pay them. Even if they are a bit expensive on labor, you will save A LOT off of that ridiculous quote. Now all of this is assuming that’s the actual problem. Try re bedding them as already mentioned. Even if that doesn’t fix the problem, with that few of miles on your car, a decent mechanic should be able to turn (resurface) the rotors on a lathe and fix the problem more often than not.

I don't think that price is outrageous. It's what OEM parts and dealer labor costs. As others have said, you can get it done for a bit cheaper elsewhere with third party shops and aftermarket parts. It's still not going to be cheap though. I wouldn't expect to make out for any less than $2,500.

Brake jobs are one of the #1 reasons people sell their Hellcats. They learn the price and go... NOPE!

Bedding brakes is for track use not street use. In fact your street driving will "un-bed" the brakes....99% of the people that talk about "bedding in " brakes have no idea what the process is or exactly what it does...

If you're willing to give it a go, here's a good YouTube for replacing the brake pads

You can buy the rotor and pad kit from Rock Auto for $1100 do it yourself and save 2k. Its a pretty easy job.

I agree bedding is more for track use. I guess I maybe should have said burnish, but that’s not the same and I don’t think you will get enough heat to help this if the rotors are still within spec. But your opinion certainly differs from mine and my experience. I have fixed shaking steering wheels on many customer cars by re-bedding the brakes due to uneven pad deposits on the rotors of sports cars where the last shop just told them they needed very expensive new rotors. But to each their own…

Powerstop’s street pads have specific bedding instructions, just for example…not just for track use.

If you want to do it yourself, you can find the OEM front rotors for about $700/ea, then another $150 if you use the Powerstop Z26 pads most of us use.

Around $1500 if you can do it yourself. Very simple job, as long as you have some tools.
