Hey everyone,

I have a 19 charger hellcat with 10.5'' replica rear rims and MT Street SS 305/35r20s on. Same setup I've had for over 2 years, with quite a few tire changes between. Two days ago I was driving to work and the check engine light came on. I plugged the scanner in and I got p0735 Gear 5 Incorrect Ratio. I have noticed that in Sport mode on the freeway the car was taking a bit longer than usual to shift out of 4th gear. For a couple weeks it has been staying around 4k rpm just cruising there for just a little bit too long.

After work I went straight to the dealership and dropped the car off. I got a rental that would be paid for "if it were a warranty issue". Today I got a message from them saying, "Found DTCs 0735, 1DB6, 215C. Notice rear tire are wrong size and not recommended from factory. Customer needs to correct rear tire size and return if there is a problem." I realize that 215C output speed correlation is obviously going to be off because the circumference of the 305/35r20 is bigger than the stock tire. I don't care about that. I do care about the 0735 Gear 5 Incorrect Ratio, especially when the car has trouble switching into 5th gear. From the few posts I've read about guys who have this problem, it seems to be faulty valve body that is an expensive fix under warranty.

I refused to pick up the car and they sent me an email from the tech, including a pdf about the 215C Output Speed Correlation code - nothing about the Gear 5 Incorrect Ratio.

Does anyone have experience with this? It's extremely hard for me to believe that 305/35r20s on a hellcat is going to cause a Gear 5 Incorrect Ratio and have troubles shifting into 5th gear. It's my fault for not changing back to the stock wheels out before I brought it to the dealership, but this seems like a petty way to get me to pay for a rental car and diagnostics, just to end up with a smoked tranny anyways.

Any advice is helpful, or rambling, or whatever. I appreciate it.

So many warranty frauds SRT has now voided warranty for anything not factory issued.

Doesn't the 2019 widebody Chargers come from the factory with 305/35/20 tires? Why would it make a difference if you used the same tire on a narrow body Charger?

My 345/30’s are 0.3” less in diameter than the OEM 305/35’s that came on my WB. I use them on the street and track. In 11,800 miles I never have seen any errors like are described above. Very rarely do I change back. Ha, last time I did change back to OEM little tires it had a major malfunction within about 30 miles! So that is what the dealer got to see;)

And now this tire issue is documented so if anything else goes wrong in your powertrain this will come up again.

They will probably say the Widebody cars have something different to allow them (bs I know but that's what they do).

Like Chevrolet voiding powertrains for towing without the tow package or plowing without the snow plow package, it's all a bunch of bs.

OP, buckle up and get ready for a long tedious argument that inevitably will cause you more anger than just swiping the credit card. I argued with my dealer for literally a month over a $150 tensioner pulley because they had "677" not "667" for my last 3 of vin. I told them the car has factory powertrain, it had 21k miles and was a 2016 (this was 2020). They said no, it clearly showed on their computer as out of warranty. I asked how that would be possible when they have a 4 year, sub 25k mile car on their lift and powertrain is 60months 60k mile coverage...

They're hoping you bite the bullet and take their "your tires are wrong" as final word and either pay or take it from them. As stated, the WB cars have a wider tire and absolutely no change to the mechanical workings of the drivetrain, just some suspension stuff.

You will get so tired of dealing with them that you're gonna look back and really kick yourself for not bringing it back 100% stock. I've had dealers try to deny a warranty for parts on a car THEY PUT ON (5 years ago, BMR lowering suspension kit on a Shelby, told me the rear blowing up was because of incorrectly set pinon angle, I showed them THEIR paperwork for install and they gave me the surprised pikachu face)

I would suggest taking it elsewhere but then you have to foot the bill for the loaner car since they're not warranty fixing the car. I suggest taking it elsewhere and letting that tab go limbo, and when another shop fixes it under warranty go back to OG dealer and tell them another place warrantied it and their charges are null and void since it WAS a warranty issue after all.

Good luck, be patient and precise. One mistake on your end and you will lose a lot of creditability.

If you bought it at that dealer and not new, you could maybe argue that the car came with those wheels from them, as I doubt they would notate the car having larger than factory size tires at point of sale but would only account for that when they're about to fork out a ton.

Not sure why they're even arguing, if they cover it their labor and material bill gets paid by SRT when they submit the reimbursement

This is exactly why I did the diff swap in my barn, keep it off record. I put 305's on also. Dropped the wheels, tires and TPMS at the dealer for them to install. Picked up the mounted tires, threw them in the back of the truck. To my surprise, the generic carfax record shows the tire work even though the car was absent. At least I can deny I ever installed them. There is always a scumbag lurking just when you don't need him.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

You mentioned 305 on the rear but nothing about the front.
I may have missed something but, just in case.
There is a big enough difference in diameter 305 vs stock 275's
to cause a problem.
Vehicle speed is picked up at the front wheel speed sensor, output speed at rear trans.
The final caveat though is,, trans turbine speed sensor vs output speed sensor relationship when in converter lock is how the computer verifys gear ratio. Hence tire size issue will cause various warning lights but generally no vehicle/trans damage, (with the exception of LSD damage if left and right rears different diameter.).
So since individual gear ratio, (5th gear) is an internally monitored code, the suggestion is you are developing a trans issue.
I didn't engineer so there may be more electronics strategy involved but pretty clear you need to: use whatever tire sizes work for you as long as you keep diameter equal 4×4 and left to right and,,, make it clear to them that diameter of tires even if wrong won't hurt internal trans though operation can be affected till sizing issue corrected. It's also been stated in a previous post
Charger HC WB's do come with 305's on all 4 points. It's just a programming change for the speedo.
Good luck, hope all this gives you some bullets.

May want to research that code. I have not worked on this exact transmission, but on other ZF and Allisons. Incorrect gear ratio has nothing to do with tire size. The ones I have worked on, that code is stating that the input compared to output ratio inside the transmission is not what the ECU is expecting to see. Which generally means a slip in a given gear. But that is just what I have seen and may not be the case in this transmission.
