So I have had the JLT for a couple years. My tuner is an LMI fan, so instead of spending another $450 I decided to try and mimic it with what I had. This will allow the hot ambient air to escape as designed and keep the media dry. (The JLT w/o the box shows no significant gain if any in IATs. Also the JLT vs the LMI run the same 30* avg over ambient air.)

I removed the box and I took a BWoody rain shield and cut off the tab. The L brackets also needed to be trimmed and drilled out. The bolts are M6x1.0 I had to fabricate a 'post' to mount it high enough to clear the 5x7 filter. It just touches the hood so thats why the electrical tape is there for now. The intake is secure with no where to go because of the wheel well but is flexible enough for the minimal contact its making with the hood. Spent $110 +/-.

I sent off a spare filter to have a cone rain shield 3D printed, but from scratch, could be awhile.

Thoughts/ideas? I haven't tested for new IATs yet btw.

Please no CAI controversy bashing.
Thanks.

Whats the reason to remove the box?

I have a JLT as well.
To allow the heat to escape. Also the whine is louder lol.

How did you get the extra part of the seal to go over the CAI tube? I considered fabricating something to completely seal the box to the hood like that.

The problem I see is that it can now suck all the hot under hood air. I have the K&N and run a filter sock for rain, snow, etc. However, now that we're going into winter, I have seen a drop in MPG when it's cold out, so.......the warmer air may make a difference.

I run a LMI with a JLT box that seals to my dual scoop hood. Minimal engine bay heat, cold air right onto the filter. I would worry more about the seal above the tube if I was in a warmer climate.

Ive run the LMI and JLT with and without the box and my IATs are always the same. One system lets the hot air out, the other "shields" it but the air has no where to go. I honestly think its tomato tomatoe. But its fun to tinker.

Wouldn't this work as a rain shield? Or is it the wrong size? AFE Challenger Magnum FORCE Cold Air Intake Rain Shield; Carbon Fiber 54-12808-C (15-21 Hellcat)

For me, right now I've been using the JLT shield when rain is in the forecast and take it off when not. Takes 2 mins and I keep it and a 10mm nut driver in the glove box when not installed.

For air temp I think the real benefit would be a heat barrier on the JLT box as the lower left side is inches from the header and valve cover. I tried some sticky shield (lava shield) on the inside and outside of the box but after the first drive it all came off (crap glue they use apparently). Trying to find a better product. Couple pics here before it all came off.

@Frosty The aFe is squared so wont fit, i looked too.
Not the glue, ive tried heat shield on tube and box twice and nothing sticks.

Yeah, that's why I think it's the adhesive as the CARB sticker from JLT isn't budging on the box but the lava shield was like painters tape on the box. Theirs gotta be something out there that is a heat barrier that will stay put.

I’m thinking of trying to 3D print something to replace the sticker crap on the JLT, and cover the gap at the top. Wonder if some heat shield on the outside of the JLT box would keep it from heating up

JLT sells the hood vent shields separately if anyone needs or wants.

With a single scoop hellcat hood the vents are only for heat dissipation and drag engine bay heat right to an aftermarket intake filter, a stock air box runs cooler than that setup.
I did drop IAT temps with the hood upgrade. Spraying methanol or a killer chiller would be more helpful than anything.

I am still shocked that nobody ever came up with a scoop and a box for the drivers side vent hole in the hood.
Something that worked off TPS signal and opened and closed like the old air grabber.....

Ive got power mods coming and it includes an ice tank and 3.5" heat exchanger.
