Likely dating myself here but ADMs? Not sure it was named that in 78 when the Corvette Pace Car came out and dealers were selling them over MSRP. Yea, that was my first (and last). Had to have one. Never saw that practice again until Hellcats came out. Had to have one but managed to find 3 black ones without a sunroof but only one of them without ADM! Got that one. And now ADMs on all cars because of the crazy times we’re in. Ordered a Redeye below invoice. Learned my lesson a long time ago (78) to never pay ADMs again.
Guess I’m wondering if ADMs have been common the past 50 years and if you have a favorite.

I have only bought 6 cars in my life. Never have paid an ADM, and I don’t think I ever will. I have bout 6 cars in my life, and every one of them has been on the practical side, with the exception of my current Charger Redeye. Which I would not have bought if I didn’t think I got a reasonable deal on.

There is just something that clicks off in my head, if I find out the only way to get a car is with paying an ADM. I just lose interest.

I remember my father paid a $1K ADM on a brand new 1990 454SS pickup. Thing gave him so many problems with oil leaks he went to arbitration. Thing was in the shop 7 times for the same problem. Sure enough on the 1991-1993 model years whatever was giving him that issue was updated/revised. He was so irritated that he never purchased another chevy again. Being he was an AMC/Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler/Mopar, etc. mechanic that’s all he purchased from that point forward.

Buick GNX. $30,000 ADM!! One dealer in Buffalo had 3 of them!
Yes,I remember that. It was the same thing in my area. I waited a couple of yrs and bought a low mi original owner car. The crazy part on those cars was the window sticker on every one of them was $29,290. They were all made with the same options.

In 2000 or 2001 I was interested in the new version of the M3. Dealers were asking MSRP and you had to wait... Salesman told me that for $5k he could have one for me right away. Told him no thanks. Never ended up buying a BMW, never considered one again.

I bought my first new car in 1984-a Dodge Rampage (remember those?).
They didn't make a lot of them and the dealer had $5000 ADM on it. I think they wanted to keep it on the lot tpo generate sales traffic. The MSRP was high 20s maybe.
I wanted it and they knew it. I negotiated for hours and hours...all afternoon in fact..finally pulled the trigger and stopped at a Red Robin for a bite and got sick in the bathroom over it.
Good times!
Didn't do that with my 2016 Hellcat..got on a list and waited for 6-9 months and ordered what I wanted in late April and got it for MSRP in June of '16.
Patience can pay off.

I remember when the PT Cruisers came out dealers were wanting a mark-up. Back then, my now ex-wife ordered one at MSRP. That and a Saturn are the only vehicles I paid MSRP, all others were below MSRP.

I never paid ADM or even MSRP, but I have overpaid for used cars that I thought were worth it (but weren’t). No different anything else, like taking that nice young lady to the expensive restaurant, it is an investment in happiness. If you play it right, the money you spend comes back in a decade or more of happiness and a lifetime of good memories. If you play it wrong, it bites you where it hurts most and the pain will last for a decade or more!

Choose wisely!

Interestingly, when mine was delivered from Kentucky, it shared a trailer with a GNX. I tried to get him to leave the GNX and take the Charger, but he wouldn't do it.

It’s not just Hellcats right now. Try buying a Hyundai Palisade or a pickup. Ridiculous times.
