Driveshaft... DSS or Wiles?

7702 Views 69 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  OldMoparGuy
Hey everyone, looking for advice. I have an original design DSS 4" aluminum driveshaft, and I wanted to know if the new design still has the old vibration issues. I also see that Wiles now has a 4' vs the 3.5". Does anyone have the new Wiles? if so, is there ANY vibration at highway speeds (60+). Looking to get as much info and recommendations as possible from people who have had both the new style DSS and new Wiles on their cars and have run the gambit with them. Thanks!

Thanks @Blkout . Does CCI make them for Livernois? Or are you saying you haven’t had/heard of issues from either of those 2?
Yes, CCI makes them for Livernois. No issues with that driveshaft.
I have the 4" Wiles, Got it from OST Dyno, Installed it back in January, 7,000 miles ago. No vibrations cruising 90 on the interstate or 185 down across the Mexican border.

Personally even though DSS is local to me, I would not buy anything from them. I wasted $1,000 on a custom DS from them when I installed a custom T56 into my Mustang and the thing vibrated from the second I finished torquing down the flange bolts even though the car was on jack stands with the battery removed and it wasn't running. I'm only half joking about that.

The only way to fix that screwup was to have a 4x4 shop cut that POS CV joint off and weld on a slip joint, after that it was smooth as butter and only cost me another $550.

Good luck with whatever choice.

What’s worse is when I was highly contemplating buying one of these I was told they really don’t hold up well in high HP and Tq applications. The tubes are not welded to the U-Joint yokes, they are bonded, ie glued together and when they get hot, like from the exhaust system that runs very close to them the glue joints fail. Check out Raven Engineering, their a little known about company that actually does some work for MW on there shafts.

Thanks for the input!! Think I’m getting closer to my decision
I have installed the latest version of the DSS aluminium and I have almost no problems with it. I drive it on the German speed open "Autobahn" and everything is ok. The only thing is, since I installed the a other solid DiffBrace, I have had a slight vibration when taking the gas off at very high speeds, which are not so relevant in the USA ;) approx 140mph, but isn´t disturbing. At my cruising speed of 85mph everything is fine and on the country road between 40 and 65 mph everything is okay too.. Perhaps the new versions of the DSS are better than the older ones with the universal joint.
I was also skeptical at first whether the DS was good. I had got it cheaper and tested it and be happy with it.
I have the new style DSS driveshaft also. Installed it May of 2020. I probably have 150 1/8 mile runs on it. I've only had the car to maybe 120 mph or so, so can't comment on vibration at high speeds, but it was fine at 120. With the elevation I am at, I probably have just a little more power than a stock hellcat. Have had a few runs where the tires really shook off the line, or almost wheel hopped, and I got out of it. Seems to be holding up fine. Had to clearance the PS muffler slightly but other than that install was easy.
Thanks for the input!! Think I’m getting closer to my decision
Oh, do tell…
I have a DSS with the direct fit CV joints and don't get any vibration. I'd take a driveshaft with CV joints over U joints any day.

I had a dss in my redeye. Vibration like a square tire. I liked the stock shaft better.
It's my understanding that they're stronger and absorb torsional shock better. 🤷‍♂️

Dump trucks and 1 ton trucks use u joints. They're strong.

CV’s SUCK especially for shock loading, my M6 cat goes through CV’s in DSS stage 5 1400 HP axels in just a few months their done. 1 wheel hopping event their toast, vibrate and make noise forever after. Trying GForce Outlaw ones now, still CV’s but their custom made by them from a better alloy verse REM Polished junk 108mm stock Porsche CV’s DSS uses.

That goes against everything I've ever learned or read about joints. 🤷‍♂️

Unfortunately the proof is in the pudding. The Ujoints in the Wiles Drive shaft have outlasted a set of stock axles, 2 sets of DSS stage 5 axles, both rebuilt twice so 4 rounds there, and a set of stock RE axles that lasted 1 pass at the track and click and vibrated the whole way home.

Ha! Your Best option is going to be which one is in stock!
Give HHP Sales a Call and check on their stock.

If your referring to me and my appetite for axles They don’t have Gforce Outlaw axles in stock, I checked. Most of these vendors don’t physically stock anything including HHP, they ship from warehouses like Turn14 etc. My axles shipped yesterday from GForce direct but Thanks for the tip.

This thread is about Driveshafts.
The answer was to the OP.

Lol Not sure what your problem is and the sarcasm isn't appreciated.

Why would my statement be anything about referring to anything about axels?

Posting about what is in stock can be any company that sells aftermarket Driveshafts.

From what I've seen posted in several places about several brands of Driveshafts, many are out of stock.
The lead time to get them can be longer than someone wants to wait. Many products are also going up in price too. Supply and demand goes all the way through the supply chain starting with raw materials.
