I live 1 block away from the Firehouse. Talking with the Captain today. He told me Tesla and all electric cars have a serious problem when they catch fire. They can’t be put out !
So if a electric car is in the garage and catches fire they can’t put it out due to the batteries.
Tree Huggers aka Climate experts never addressed this problem?
Let’s talk about this

The Orange County Fire Authority battles a fire from a burning Tesla after it crashed into a garage in Lake Forest, Calif., on Aug. 25, 2017. When firefighters removed the SUV from the garage to assess the fire, they identified the fuel source as the SUV's high-voltage battery pack.

I've heard the current training is to create a perimeter and there is no rescue protocol.

Lithium-ion batteries pose a unique serious threat, and most first responders are not prepared.

I work at the Mercedes Plant here in Tuscaloosa, AL. We have special buildings or "areas" to put either the batteries or the vehicles if they (for some reason) "take off". I personally think most people will head the other way but, we do have a protocol set up in case this happens. BTW: The battery in our SUV weighs more than 1,700 pounds!

They are dangerous for sure when ignited.

I never park mine in the garage and keep it at least ten feet from my house.

Ive also had a talk with my family that everyone is to get out of the car and way off the road if we ever have an accident, even if its minor.

Although they are a great life hack to essentially travel for free, like everything else there are dangers involved.

These batteries have Lithium in them, and a lot of it. Lithium reacts with water violently, and the reaction releases hydrogen gas, which is extremely flammable. I guess one could try to extinguish an electric car fire with CO2 or some water-free foam, but I don't think fire crews routinely have that.

We have a cement and rebar out building for “problem” battery packs, far away from the assembly plant, paint and body shops!
How to get the battery pack to the out building, we’ll that’s another issue:)

Just gonna leave this here.
Funny how the hybrid is #1. Not to mention how easy it is to extinguish a gas fire, simply remove O2.

Funny how the hybrid is #1. Since EV represent less than 1%, the numbers clearly indicate EV's are a much bigger hazard. Not to mention how easy it is to extinguish a gas fire, simply remove O2.

But….that’s not why he put the chart up! You missed the point, EVs are way more better.

Chemical fires cant be put out with water generally. They need a neutralizer that can stop the chemical reaction.
Correct. The presence of water does not stop gas from burning, but removing O2 by using soap foam, CO2 or even a rug can extinguish it. The EV reaction is whole new ball game. Just wait until the terrorists start using them.

So... math.

You sell 100,000 gas cars, you get 1,529.9 fires. A 1.5299% chance of a fire.
You sell 100,000 EV cars, you get 25.1 fires. A .0251% chance of a fire.
Summary: gas cars are almost 61 times likelier to have a fire.

Being able to post links to news stories about EV fires underlines this very, very nicely: it's newsworthy when an EV fire happens. When a traditional carbeque happens, it's so common that nobody bothers reporting it.

Don't worry about agenda. Focus on facts and math. It doesn't matter if you - or I - like EVs. It doesn't matter if "greens" or "commies" or "God" is pushing or forcing change. All that matters is that this specific topic... is a win for EV.

Mostly correct. Water will put out a gas fire but copious amounts is needed. To put out any fire you need to remove one of the 3.....fuel , oxygen or heat source to interupt the unhibited chemical chain reaction. A gas fire like a fuel tanker fully involved will takes lots of water 15k gallons rapidly mixed with AFFF(foam). The goal is a thick blanket of foam that inhibits the oxygen from getting to the fuel then ultimately cooling the gasoline. Doesnt work so well on a running fuel fires. We done it in Florida around 2005. Li battery your only option is to remove the heat source which is the power source. You just dont pop the hood or trunk to do this and there is no standardization between manufacturers. Most EV have multiple sources in strange locations that are not easily accessible. Most EV cars will burn where they sit. If its in your garage, part of your house is going up. If possible, we try to hook to our winch on a 60k lb Rescue and drag it from the garage.
