Where I live we have very hard water. This makes cleaning your car a lot harder with water spots all over.

Can anyone recommend a good garden hose filter that will actually work?

Not sure but here in Texas the water is very hard. I have a house system that I can hook up too. I feel your pain as I have used the other and it turns out just as you said. I’ve found that washing it out of the sun and ensure the car has not been run so the hood is cool. Get a good silicone squeegee and wipe the water off as soon as possible and follow up with a soft cloth.

Well unfortunately no filter will help with hard water unless the filters are full of resin and you are producing deionized water.
CR Spotless is great, but cost some.

For washing the car I do have a 20-inch filter with I believe a .5 micron filter inside.

This won't help with water spots but the water is a little cleaner.
I use the filter to wash then the CR spotless to give a quick rinse then I have a Master Blaster to blow off most of the water.

I 2nd the CR Spotless system. Been using a DIC-20 system for 4 years now.

Mabey, just mabey you should take the 3 seconds to read my first post, I actually write no filter will help with water spots. Then my next post where you got the quote from, where I say again this won't help spots, and I go on to write I use a CR Spotless resin system to take care of the spots.
Sometimes it's better to let people think you're an idiot instead of writing something and proving it.

I use this. It's the same as the CR unit, but sometimes cheaper. No pre filter before the APEC unit though.

And water softener salt is 99.8% pure salt, if you want to wash your car with that.

I blow dry it real quick. Water here lousy too. Detail spray mist before drying is supposed to neutralize the minerals. Stay out of the sun.
