Hey guys question
I have a 2021 hellcat widebody charger I bought brand new before I went catless on the car my car has been running weird so I doubt it's running rich if it's been doing it before I did anything to the car

On the freeway I believe I have it in sport mode whenever I want to smash around a slow driver or I'm roll racing it feels like my car will shift soo late to the point it feels like the gears are grinding and it will jerk the whole car back (while in auto). What the hell is going on?

People in the hellcat forums on Facebook are telling me it's normal for hellcats and one of the service reps at dodge is telling me it's normal as well but on my scatpack I never had that problem.

I don't think it's normal for a car to be in automatic and grind gears and shift late like that to the point it will pull the whole car back and studder like that especially on a brand new car especially if it was doing it before I did anything to my cats.

2021 widebody charger hellcat running on 315 nittos in back with LegmKer Intake and JBA catless mids and resonator and mid muffler delete Everything else is stock. Only 3k miles on it

Doesn't sport mode require you to manually shift the transmission? If so it reads like you are too slow and the engine is hitting the rev limiter.

Word I got is with an automatic Hellcat for best launch put the transmission into manual mode, shift to 2nd. Launch the car. At this time move the lever to automatic mode and let the engine/transmission controllers shift the transmission as you continue down the track.

On a roll in D mode one can use the -paddle to downshift to the best/lowest gear for acceleration while flooring the gas pedal. The few times I did this the rear tires broke loose. But I believe -- you'll have to confirm this -- that if still in D the automatic will still up shift on its own.

I've took it to service and they are telling me it's normal and I don't have any updates or anything but I think they are just lazy because I work in the sales department and they don't want to look at my car

No sport mode you can still drive in automatic I was in automatic when the gears started to shift late and grind

Hi Hellcat.Muk,
We certainly understand your sentiments and we do regret to hear of the trouble you are experiencing. If you are not satisfied with the result of your current dealer, we kindly recommend visiting a new dealership for a second opinion. If you do work with another dealer, we would be more than happy to provide you with additional support via PM.

Actual grinding of gears in an automatic is hard to imagine what would cause this. The gears are in constant mesh there are not even gear dogs which -- in a manual -- moved about to engage the preferred gear.

In the automatic, to engage one set of gears from one of the several planetary gear sets in the transmission a brake (band brake) or with the more sophisticated transmissions in at least the Scat Pack/Hellcat multi disc clutches is used. As the transmission moves from one gear to the next one clutch pack is disengaged while another is engaged.

About the only thing that comes to mind is if the automatic transmission valving/hydraulic system is acting up the concurrent disengagement of the gear set currently selected while the engagement of the gear desired is not happening with the right timing. No grinding but the two clutches could be fighting one another. That might (might) feel like grinding.

Even if the CEL is not on I would want a scan of the vehicle done with a Dodge factory computer to check for any proprietary error codes/conditions logged. I know Dodge does this for when I had my Hellcat in for a goofy +paddle issue the shop foreman scanned the car and found several (proprietary) low voltage errors logged.

Beyond this all I can think of is to arrange a ride along with a senior tech (or shop foreman, usually one and the same person) and demo the behavior to him.

Take it to a different dealer service dept. You’re not limited to where you bought it. Grinding gears is not normal. It should drive very similar to your SP, just with more power.

Did you ever get any update from any dealers at all? Mine is going in soon for this same issue. Another on here had the issue as well

Yes I took it to a different dealership they just reflashed my whole system and now it’s fine they saying they couldn’t find anything but with them flashing it and it’s fine now it probably wasn’t PDI’d correctly when coming off the lot each car has to go through a pdi when coming off the delivery truck from factory and the service tech probably skipped a few steps or something and caused a glitch in the system so the flash reset basically corrected everything

Also, which dealer did you take it to that re-flashed and fixed it?

i just got my 2021 charger delivered a few weeks back. I’m having the same issue man. Got like 300 miles on it. I put it in track mode once to test it out and it was jerking badly and redlining. I’m wondering if mine needs to be flashed also?

It's good to know that Dodge still honors the warranty, flashing it, even though you changed tire size and deleted federal emission items. You should probably get your transmission replaced, any grinding in an automatic just introduces metal particles into the whole trans, not to mention the torque converter, lines and cooler.
